The New Mechanism in League of Legends Receives Mixed Reviews
As we know, among the updates for the new 2026 season, Riot has officially implemented WASD. For those who are unaware, this mechanism will allow players to move champions in League of Legends similarly to how players move in soccer games, meaning instead of using the right mouse button as usual, players will use a key combination. However, this has led to mixed opinions within the community.

According to the majority opinion, WASD could help new players engage with the game more easily. One of the highest skills a League of Legends player needs, especially in damage-dealing roles like AD Carry or Top Lane, Mid Lane, is “hit and run” and “kiting”.
However, clearly, not everyone is a Gumayusi, capable of simultaneously executing high-speed clicks to move and shoot (both using the right mouse button or right mouse button + key A). WASD effectively addresses this issue by clearly separating the tasks. Players move with WASD and shoot with the mouse.

However, this has raised concerns that players will no longer be able to improve their “hit and run” skills effectively, which over time will diminish the characteristics that differentiate high-skill players from regular players, especially in the AD Carry role. When everyone can smoothly “hit and run,” it no longer serves as a benchmark to evaluate whether a player can be a good AD Carry.
Riot May Continue Testing for League of Legends
Nevertheless, this mechanism is currently added to the Pre-Season phase, and Riot will continue to assess player feedback before deciding whether to maintain or remove it. Like many mechanisms that have appeared and disappeared in the past, everything will depend on the players themselves and then Riot’s decision.

But if it can attract more players, that may be the most important factor, and WASD – with its simplified control mechanisms – could fulfill this role well, especially for new players approaching League of Legends for the first time.
