LCK Champions, Gen.G Faces a New Challenge at Worlds 2025
In the grand finals of LCK 2025, Gen.G brilliantly defeated HLE to take the championship title. Not only did they reclaim their dominant position in the highest League of Legends tournament in Korea, but they also secured the number 1 seed for LCK at Worlds 2025. Thus, since 2022, Gen.G has made it to the Worlds 3 out of 4 times as the number 1 seed. However, a heavy “curse” awaits Gen.G from this point onward.
Gen.G has arrived at Worlds 2025 as seed 1.
Accordingly, since Damwon Gaming’s championship at Worlds 2020, no number 1 seed from LCK has won the Worlds title. DWG also initiated this “curse” when they continued to win LCK Summer 2021 and lost in the finals. And it is Gen.G that has been the heaviest burden under this “challenge,” as they have consistently failed at Worlds despite always being seen as top contenders for the championship.
In fact, from 2022 to 2025, Gen.G has participated in Worlds 4 times, but their best results have been reaching the semifinals twice and being eliminated in the quarterfinals once.
Since 2021, no number 1 seed from LCK has won Worlds.
Gen.G is Facing an Unprecedented Opportunity at Worlds 2025
Compared to previous lineups, Gen.G is currently stronger than ever, and it is indeed very difficult to build a perfect roster like Gen.G has now. They are strong in all 5 positions, and all 5 players are in good form with solid mentalities. With what they have shown since the beginning of the year, Gen.G is currently the best version of themselves, and there may not be a better opportunity for them to win the Worlds title.
Does Gen.G have what it takes to break the curse?.
The Worlds stage has never been easy for Gen.G and Chovy personally. But if they continue to fail this year, perhaps the audience and experts alike will be at a loss for explanations, as Gen.G currently gives the impression that “they want to win at any time.”
