Recently, after a great victory against Nongshim RedForce, Gen.G set two records at once: first, the team with the longest winning streak in the history of the tournament, and second, the team with the longest 2-0 winning streak in the history of the Korean League of Legends. It can be said that the current Gen.G roster is the dominant force in the LCK. Of course, when stepping onto the international stage, they still have their share of bumps, as exemplified by their 0-2 loss to Top Esports at the 2024 Esports World Cup. However, if only counting within the framework of the official tournaments recognized by Riot in the system, Gen.G remains “the unrivaled champion.”
However, when looking at the top 3 teams with the longest undefeated records in LCK history, Gen.G is still considered the weakest because they lack one important factor: the World Championship title.
SKT T1 Summer 2015
This was the first team to set the concept of a perfect roster in every position and establish the first undefeated record in LCK and League of Legends history with 14 consecutive wins. SKT T1 of 2015 was so close to perfection that many believed they would be the first team to achieve a Grand Slam title. Unfortunately, at the first MSI tournament of the League of Legends world, SKT T1 2015 could not defeat EDG, losing not only their undefeated streak but also their hopes of becoming the first team to complete the Golden Road in League of Legends history.
Fnatic Summer 2015
If we consider it, FNC had an advantage in 2015 when the LEC was still using a BO1 format, making it somewhat easier to achieve an undefeated streak. Not to mention, FNC at that time boasted a lineup of stars, significantly stronger than other teams in the region, featuring the superstar marksman Rekkles and the duo of Huni – Reignover. However, despite performing well at Worlds that year, FNC could not surpass a very strong KOO Tigers in the semifinals. 2015 could also be seen as the last flourishing period of FNC, once the most powerful team in Europe.
Invictus Gaming Spring 2018
The next name on the list is IG from Spring 2018. The newly formed roster immediately showcased impressive performance from the once “giant” of the LPL. After an opening match loss to Royal Never Give Up, IG remained undefeated in all remaining matches of the LPL Spring 2018 group stage. Unfortunately, they could not clinch the championship, and the team that defeated TheShy and his teammates was none other than RNG. Moving into the Summer split that year, IG once again matched this achievement. But their winning streak was “shut down” in the third week of competition, again at the hands of RNG. However, this time IG finished as LPL runners-up and later became the World Champions.
T1 Spring 2022
Before Gen.G established its undefeated streak, T1 was the team with the longest undefeated period in the history of both LCK and the world of League of Legends in general. The ZOFGK roster, forming together for the first time, brought a highly variable and dazzling playstyle that left opponents unable to read them. However, this undefeated lineup would not achieve their first international title until Worlds 2023, after a series of unfortunate runner-up finishes. Nevertheless, before the current Gen.G roster established its dominance, the ZOFGK lineup was considered the strongest in the LCK, only second to the legendary SKT T1 2015 roster.
Gen.G 2024
Currently, Gen.G is the team with the longest undefeated streak in the history of both the LCK and Riot’s official international tournaments. However, aside from FNC 2015, which had already secured a Worlds title beforehand, the other undefeated teams mentioned above share a common point: They all owned a “unrivaled” streak and subsequently secured a Worlds championship title.
Meanwhile, the Worlds title is also the accolade that Gen.G still lacks (not counting the two titles of Samsung Galaxy). And all statistics or records only hold significance when Gen.G completes the Golden Road with the upcoming Worlds 2024 championship. Otherwise, Gen.G’s undefeated streak may just become a nostalgic memory.
