Teams That Have Achieved Perfect Group Stages in League of Legends History: GAM Joins T1

Remaining undefeated throughout the group stage of a season like T1 did in LCK Spring 2022 is no easy feat in the League of Legends scene.

Fnatic – LEC Summer 2015

As one of the most traditional teams in Europe, Fnatic has had dominant periods in the tournament. The most notable was in LEC Summer 2015 (when the tournament was still called LCS EU), where FNC achieved a destructive group stage with 18 consecutive wins.

This was also the time when the team had superstar AD Carry Rekkles and a highly skilled Korean duo, Huni and Reignover, with superior skill and mindset compared to the aging players in Europe at that time. However, FNC still had to work hard to become the champions that season after defeating Xpeke’s Origen in the finals.

Following that, FNC had a quite successful 2015 World Championship, reaching the semifinals and only losing to the incredibly talented KOO Tigers.

Flash Wolves – LMS Spring 2017 and Summer 2018

Considered the longest-dominating team in the League of Legends scene in Taiwan, Flash Wolves frequently secured domestic championships with ease, especially during the 2016-2018 period.

With a best-of-three format, the power of the Wolves was clearly overwhelming compared to other representatives. Thus, the team achieved two undefeated group stage seasons with a record of 14-0. In Spring 2017, Flash Wolves only lost a single match.

On the international stage, Flash Wolves were seen as a troublesome obstacle for Korean teams. However, the team’s overall performance at the 2016-2018 World Championships was not impressive, as they were eliminated in the group stage each time.

PSG Talon – PCS Summer 2021

After the League of Legends tournament in Taiwan, LMS, merged with Southeast Asian countries (excluding Vietnam), the Taiwanese teams continued to maintain their dominance. In 2021, PSG Talon emerged as a very strong representative and showed no rivals in this region.

In the Summer 2021 tournament, PSG Talon won all 18 matches in the group stage. Although the tournament had been changed to best-of-one matches, it was clear that no team could pull off an upset.

PSG Talon also made waves in international tournaments by reaching the semifinals of MSI 2021, only losing to reigning champions Royal Never Give Up. At the 2021 World Championship, PSG Talon did not advance past the group stage but still had a decent record (3 wins, 3 losses).

GAM Esports – VCS Spring 2017

Before achieving surprising feats for Vietnam’s League of Legends on the international stage in 2017, GAM Esports had a perfect start in the domestic arena.

Optimus, Levi, and their teammates won all 12 group stage matches in a best-of-three format. They then continued to defeat Young Generation 3-0 in the finals. This was also the result when GAM faced the Thai representative, Ascension Gaming, in the GPL Spring 2017 finals.

Besides Levi, who is still active, the championship roster from that season now contributes to three coaches for teams in VCS, including Archie, Sergh, and Stark. Additionally, Slay also serves as a coach for SBTC Esports. Meanwhile, Optimus is now focused on a successful streaming career and has a large fan base.

T1 – LCK Spring 2022

Finally, it would be redundant to mention the super record that T1 set recently in LCK Spring 2022. After a somewhat “quiet” transfer period, with Faker now at the later stage of his career, it’s no surprise that the League of Legends community had many doubts about T1. Especially at this time, this is a lineup that can be considered very youthful, with top laner Zeus even being eight years younger than Faker.

But shattering all doubts, Faker and his teammates kept getting better and better. They defeated DWG KIA in both the home and away matches. T1 also beat several other prominent names like Gen.G Esports and DRX… on their way to setting the super record. Of course, luck played a role, but certainly, if the T1 players hadn’t put in the effort, there wouldn’t have been any luck at all. And it can be said that T1’s impressive achievement is well-deserved. It also proves that they are indeed a formidable force, if not the strongest team in the League of Legends scene today.
