In the early hours of March 8th, according to Vietnam time, the second day of the North America regional qualifiers for Teamfight Tactics: Destiny officially took place. One thing that gamers could take away from this day of competition is that the Butcher and Protector – Blade Master compositions proved to be overwhelmingly strong, winning 4 out of 5 games.
The remaining victory in game 2 belonged to the 7 Mage team, a composition not even in the meta, from player Agon. So how did player Agon achieve this seemingly impossible feat? Let’s find out.

To successfully build the 7 Mage composition, the first condition is that you need to have a strong Mage unit early in the game. The ideal unit would be Brand, as this champion has extremely strong damage and stun capabilities. At that point, you should adopt a slow roll strategy at level 5 to find a way to get this unit to 3 stars.

If you cannot upgrade Brand to 3 stars early, leveling up to 6 is crucial. The reason is that at level 6, the appearance rate of 1-cost and 2-cost units is equal. Therefore, when rolling at level 6, you will have a higher chance to upgrade both Annie and Brand to 3 stars.

In the mid-game phase, you should aim to reach the 5 Mage threshold as quickly as possible. This will allow Veigar to accumulate skill damage early and deal effective damage without needing many items. For the front line, you should pick the strongest tank traits to shield the Mages in the back row. Units like Brawlers and Vanguard such as Tahm Kench, Nunu & Willump, Braum, Nautilus… are the champions you should purchase.

By the late game phase, you will aim to complete the 7 Mage composition with the addition of Aurelion Sol. Additionally, single units with immediate high power like Shen and Zilean are the champions you should invest in at the end of the game. Shen is an excellent single tank while Zilean will give the fragile Mage champions a chance to cast their spells.

Regarding item builds, the item set that Agon used for the main carry Brand includes Rabadon’s Deathcap, Hextech Gunblade, and Infinity Edge. These provide Brand with a massive amount of damage right in the mid-game. You should also combine a Chalice of Power for Lulu or Veigar to further buff Brand’s skill damage. For Aurelion Sol, this unit probably only needs a Glacial Gauntlet to deal damage effectively.

For Annie, items like Dragon Claw, Thornmail, and Zz’Rot Portal are those that players should combine. They will help Annie withstand fights extremely well, not die too quickly, and utilize her ability to shield twice from her skill and the Mage trait.
