T1 Made a Serious Mistake by Choosing a ‘Weak’ Champion for Their Carry in the 2024 Worlds Debut
After days of waiting, the Swiss round of the 2024 Worlds has officially kicked off, and one of the most anticipated matches was T1 vs. Top Esports. Both teams have unpredictable playstyles, and even their carries can stumble at any moment. However, when they perform at their peak, even top teams like Gen.G or Bilibili Gaming can fall to them.

Indeed, the T1 vs. TES match fully showcased the characteristics of both teams and aligned with many expectations. The LPL runners-up, TES, performed exceptionally well and, following a victorious skirmish near Baron, defeated T1 for a flawless debut.
As for T1, they suffered a loss on a day when they didn’t actually perform too poorly. However, their seemingly strong team composition could not secure an early finish against their opponents. Notably, T1 made a critical error by allowing Gumayusi—their main ADC—to use the champion Ashe. In a skirmish, Ashe could not compete with the damage output of Jhin from the opposing team led by JackeyLove.

T1’s Loss to TES Extends Ashe’s Poor Performance with Gumayusi
In fact, Gumayusi is one of the three worst Ashe players currently participating in Worlds among all ADCs. Even the win rate of Ashe in Gumayusi’s hands, considering only players who have played Ashe in 7 or more matches, shows that he is among the two worst players, just slightly above Light from Weibo Gaming. Specifically, Gumayusi has a win rate of only 55.7% after 7 matches (not including the match against TES), while Light has just 45.5% after 11 matches.

T1 executed fights as best as they could with the skills of Faker and Keria, and somewhat Oner as well. However, they lacked any champions with sufficient damage to finish off their opponents early and did not have any champions among their picks that were tanky enough to act as a front line. With such a lineup, T1’s defeat is perhaps not surprising.
