In professional League of Legends, especially in the highest level international tournaments like the World Championship, the choice of items can bring both benefits and certain drawbacks. In particular, players sometimes have to make decisions that are truly suited to the game situation, but of course, mistakes are unavoidable. Therefore, the type of item can significantly impact the outcome of the match, especially when the skill levels of the players are equal.

As the Worlds 2023 has passed the halfway mark, many viewers have begun to notice an item that can be considered one of the most overpowered currently. And it’s not a name that’s unfamiliar, it’s the Stopwatch – the most crucial item component leading to either Guardian Angel or Zhonya’s Hourglass. Notably, there have been numerous matches where the Stopwatch played a critical role in completely turning the tide of the game. The most recent example was the KT Rolster vs Dplus KIA match, where at least 4 players from both teams activated their Stopwatches simultaneously in a team fight.

Of course, there are many opinions arguing that the timing of activating the Stopwatch is incredibly important. However, in the case of professional players, where skill levels are equal, the precise timing for using this item is quite normal. Therefore, the “overpowered” nature of the Stopwatch is undeniable. Many have suggested that Riot either remove the Stopwatch or nerf the Zhonya’s Hourglass.

Naturally, Riot will not simply remove an item that has become essential in matches, especially in the professional arena, just because of player outcry. Riot itself has already nerfed the Stopwatch, but clearly, with the benefits the item provides, it remains extremely necessary for every player, especially in critical “life-or-death” situations during matches.
