Riot Games Officially Allows Yagao to Replace Scout at Worlds 2024

In recent days, the controversy surrounding Scout and his former team EDG has gained a lot of attention from the community. Specifically, Scout and EDG are facing a serious contract dispute that has temporarily prevented the player from leaving China in the near future. With the 2024 World Championship fast approaching, this situation puts Scout at risk of missing the upcoming major tournament.

On September 19, Riot Games made an official announcement regarding the aforementioned incident. Specifically, Riot has allowed Yagao to replace Scout at the upcoming 2024 World Championship upon learning that the former 2021 World Champion cannot temporarily leave the country. Additionally, Riot stated that if the travel ban is lifted during the 2024 Worlds, Scout would still be allowed to compete, provided he notifies the organizers 72 hours before their next match.

Riot also issued a statement regarding Scout's situation, indicating that LNG is still allowed to keep Yagao, but Scout's case is under negotiation and he will have to join LNG immediately after the travel ban is lifted. LNG will also be notified 72 hours before their next match if there are changes to personnel. Riot will monitor all processes to ensure fairness for all parties

LCK Audience Outraged by Riot Games’ Handling of Scout Incident

It should be noted that before receiving the official information above, the temporary replacement of Scout by Yagao at the 2024 Worlds had been heavily speculated. Once Riot Games confirmed this information, it became a hot topic of discussion within the League of Legends community, with many mixed opinions. Among them, fans in the LCK region expressed extreme outrage at Riot Games’ decision. Some players even questioned the necessity of the “six-man roster” rule regarding substitute players.

“If LNG wins this year’s Worlds, it will definitely lead to a lot of trouble” – A player asserted
“This means that the existence of official players is meaningless. Is this really a competitive sport?” – An LCK fan expressed disappointment
“Why do we need a six-man roster? Why do we need a youth roster? Why do we need to train talents? Instead, we could just hire from other teams” – Another fan questioned Riot’s rules
“There is no rule allowing a team to use a player from another team, but Riot agreed. In that case, it’s time to abolish the six-man roster rule” – Another fan agreed

Not stopping there, some League of Legends experts also opposed Riot Games’ decision to allow Yagao to temporarily replace Scout. Notably, former LCK caster Monte Cristo expressed that this sets a very bad precedent for the professional League of Legends scene. “I don’t understand why LNG is allowed to hire a top player from a team that isn’t going to Worlds. This sets a bad precedent where teams could build a star-studded roster just for one major tournament. This is LNG/Scout’s fault, and they need to accept that,” former caster Monte Cristo bluntly stated.

Indeed, the criticisms mentioned above are valid as rules such as roster deadline, substitute player registration, etc., exist to prevent the transfer market from becoming chaotic. Otherwise, teams could spend large sums to hire excellent players for a short period to compete in a crucial tournament. This would undermine aspects such as identity, tradition, or the effort of teams throughout the season, which fans certainly do not want to see happen.

Fairly speaking, Scout’s situation is quite rare, so Riot Games allowed them to hire Yagao given the proximity of the 2024 Worlds. However, Riot should also make necessary additions to the rules or manage transfers more strictly in the future. This would prevent similar incidents involving Scout and help Riot Games avoid the “public backlash” they are currently facing.
