If You Were in Their Shoes, Would You Sell Out?

A pressing question amidst the recent scandals of match-fixing, betting, and corruption exposed within the League of Legends tournament system in China.

The incident of the LDL tournament being suspended due to the issue of match-fixing has sent shockwaves throughout the entire League of Legends community in China. On social media platforms in the panda country, many prominent figures in the Chinese League of Legends scene have spoken out, revealing various dark sides of the current state of cheating in professional play.

Efeng – the former manager of the eStar team, shocked everyone even more by presenting a case of a player being lured into match-fixing for an amount equivalent to… 30 months’ salary. Just by “intentionally losing” one match, you would receive an amount equal to two and a half years of struggling gameplay.

Ruler Continues to Speak Out on Sensitive Incident

If you are a professional player who has been playing for 2-3 years, and you are no longer young, and finally you have succeeded in playing in the highest league, with a salary of 20,000 yuan (about 71 million VND). Halfway through the season, your team announces that you will have to sit on the bench for the next match. At this point, someone approaches you, promising to pay you 600,000 yuan (about 2 billion VND) to lose the final game. Your team will face an opponent in this match that your team has never beaten. So what is your choice? And why?

Note that you are guaranteed to encounter no obstacles whatsoever.”

In the comments section, Efeng also added that the character in the story is real, and this person chose to refuse the match-fixing offer. What he wants to discuss through this story is, if you were in that player’s position, would gamers be willing to sell their honor for the “temptation of money,” accepting the “harsh reality,” or would they fight to the end for their passion and self-respect?

Efeng’s post immediately became a hot topic on Weibo, sparking many debates and even criticisms. But surprisingly, a significant number of netizens commented in support of match-fixing, and this response intensified the heated arguments between the two sides debating whether one should or should not sell out:

– This is my favorite game; my wish is to fight for it with all my might. If I want to sell out, then raise the price.

– For the sake of my dream, I will fight with all my strength; if I succeed and win, the money I receive will be much greater.

– If I need money, then selling out is also acceptable.

– If it were me, even at the end of my career, I would still think of ways to improve myself and fight for a starting position. I would cherish every day, every hour I have left to compete. I want to experience victory in the game and stand on stage, feeling the layers of fans cheering. What? Selling out for 600,000? So what’s the specific plan? Speak up!

– If it were in a fantasy world, I might refuse, but in reality, I think anyone who has ever been immersed in poverty would choose that 600,000 yuan. That’s the truth.

– It sounds like your boss is telling you this is your last project, and once it’s done, you’ll be laid off. Thinking about N+1 possibilities that may occur in the future, but the outcome is always you being kicked out of your rented house. At this point, a recruiter comes and tells you that your company’s competitor is willing to pay an enormous amount for you to participate in activities that undermine your own company. Why can’t you participate? The community’s ethical standards are good, but you don’t necessarily have to apply them to yourself.

– I don’t understand, at that age, how can you not realize that earning 20,000 a month in society is already a struggle?

– Realistically, most people would choose to take that money (600,000 yuan).

Through a few typical comments mentioned above, it can be seen that even though match-fixing has become a violation of the rules in professional League of Legends, there are still quite a few viewers who support it.

Many even argue that it is better to sell one game for several hundred thousand yuan than to live a meager life with a low salary, with very few chances of success. There are also comments that are half-joking and half-serious, showing a significant portion of the audience’s indifference to the issue of match-fixing in professional tournaments.

Of course, there are still many viewers who strongly oppose match-fixing, arguing that it is an unethical act. It not only risks ruining the career and future of the violating player, but also betrays the trust of the organization and teammates, discarding the honor of someone in a legitimate profession.

After all, whether or not to sell out is ultimately a matter of personal perspective. The only reality is that any form of cheating in the game must face severe penalties, and players involved in cheating will always face the wrath of the organizers, with the heaviest penalty being the destruction of their career.
