Gen.G Unveils Controversial 2024 Worlds Skin
As is customary, League of Legends teams have their own skins for international tournaments they participate in throughout the year, especially at the Worlds Championship. Furthermore, it seems that in 2024, many teams have started to pay attention to the “spiritual” factor, leading several teams to adopt the 2024 Worlds skin predominantly in white. Even top-tier teams such as Bilibili Gaming, T1, and Gen.G are no exceptions. However, recently, the 2024 Worlds skin from Gen.G has sparked intense controversy within the League of Legends community due to a particular detail on the jersey.

Specifically, on the official jacket of Gen.G for Worlds 2024, the team has included an option for those who want to own it, which is two stars in the form of pins. However, the content on these two stars is what draws attention. These stars represent the two championships won by Samsung Galaxy in 2014 and 2017.

However, this additional detail is what caused the controversy, as for the League of Legends community, both championships in those years were won by SSG, but on Gen.G’s pin, the 2017 championship is attributed to this team. Meanwhile, the name Gen.G only appeared in March 2018, and prior to that, KSV Esports merely acquired SSG after the conclusion of Worlds 2017.

The Core of the “2 Worlds Championships of Gen.G” Debate
In fact, Riot may have recognized the two championships of Gen.G after KSV acquired the brand and rebranded it to Gen.G in 2018. However, to this day, no one can provide an official statement from Riot on this matter. Therefore, to public opinion, the two championships of SSG remain SSG’s. However, Gen.G’s COO has also stated that this team can indeed attach stars to their jersey and has physical trophies, but they will not do so until they officially win a Worlds Championship.

The community itself does not entirely dismiss Riot’s recognition, but the issue of Gen.G printing the team’s name for the 2017 championship is indeed a very puzzling move. The controversy escalated as the community believes that the title should still belong to SSG, not Gen.G, a team that did not even exist until SSG lifted the championship trophy. Some even argue that printing such information could be seen as undermining SSG’s achievements and existence in League of Legends history, which is why the community is extremely upset.
