Gamer Faces “Bitter Fruit” Due to a Security Feature
One of the security features applied to many chat applications today is end-to-end encryption (E2EE). However, the downside of this feature in many chat apps is that it can easily result in the loss of old messages if users switch devices. Not just one, but many chat applications encounter this issue, leaving users in a “half-laughing, half-crying” situation.
“I was getting to know a girl while gaming, and she even gave me her phone number for easier contact. We managed to set up a first date. But on the day of the date, my account required a code to encrypt the messages. For some reason, it kept failing, and I couldn’t remember where we had planned to meet. I know it was my fault for not taking notes, but who would expect message encryption to kick in right at that moment?” a male gamer lamented.
According to this individual’s update later, the date went smoothly because the girl proactively called him beforehand. However, it’s clear that the security issue stemming from end-to-end encryption nearly cost the gamer a chance to end his single life.
Gamer Accidentally Finds a Solution
In the same post, this person mentioned that he later found a new chat application called Lotus Chat. Although it also has end-to-end encryption, it updates messages quite quickly. Notably, Lotus Chat’s E2EE is implemented automatically, without the need to enter a code to recover messages.
“This chat application may be new, but it doesn’t have many minor bugs. Especially, when switching devices, there are no lost messages or codes needed for recovery. For me, that’s good enough, so now we mainly chat through Lotus,” he said.
The E2EE security feature has been integrated into many chat applications. However, maximizing this feature to provide the best experience for users is not something every application can achieve. And it is users who encounter “half-laughing, half-crying” issues like the male gamer mentioned as an example.
