On April 14th, a historic milestone was set in the LCK tournament when Gen.G defeated T1 to claim the championship for the fourth consecutive time. Notably, in all four LCK finals that Gen.G has won, their opponent has always been T1. This shows that Gen.G truly is a “hard counter” to Faker and his teammates, at least in the LCK arena.

One of the notable highlights in the recent LCK Spring 2024 finals was Gen.G’s pick of Kha’Zix in game 4. This champion played a significant role in helping Gen.G secure the victory and halt T1’s momentum. Multiple times in game 4, Kha’Zix in Canyon’s hands secured crucial kills against Oner and disrupted T1’s attempts to attack and contest objectives.
It is worth noting that throughout the group stage and leading up to the finals, Canyon had never used Kha’Zix. Therefore, this was a choice that surprised both T1 and the audience. After the match concluded, numerous questions regarding the Kha’Zix pick were directed at Canyon. The surprising part is that the decision to use the Void Assassin did not come from Gen.G’s jungler.

“The decision to pick Kha’Zix came from Chovy. He suddenly asked me if I could play this champion well. I had practiced Kha’Zix a bit in ranked and in some scrims. So when Chovy figured out that T1 would pick Xin Zhao, we agreed that Kha’Zix was a good counter,” Canyon shared after the match.

Indeed, looking at T1’s victories in games 2 and 3, the audience can see how impactful Xin Zhao was. His ultimate can disrupt team formations, causing Gen.G to be frequently split during skirmishes. Clearly, in that situation, pure tank champions like Sejuani or Rell appeared ineffective. Had Chovy not made the decision to pick Kha’Zix, Gen.G could very well have lost game 4 and missed out on this championship.

With the LCK Spring 2024 championship, Chovy and his teammates continue to assert their dominance in the regional scene. However, Gen.G still has an important tournament ahead, which is MSI 2024. It is worth noting that Gen.G has had a poor record in international tournaments over the years. Hopefully, Chovy will maintain his excellent ban-pick reading ability to help the team “break the curse” and secure this important title.
