It can be said that the recently concluded Spring 2024 tournament of the League of Legends community witnessed many fluctuations in the most notable regions of the scene. For instance, LCK with the tumultuous journey of T1, along with DDoS incidents affecting the tournament and plots against Faker and his teammates. Or VCS becoming the most talked-about region towards the end of the group stage amid accusations of misconduct. And of course, we cannot overlook LPL as the appeal of this tournament has significantly diminished with a series of stars underperforming or taking breaks, such as TheShy, Kanavi, and Ruler.

The absence of top superstars, combined with doubts about the professionalism as all four teams from LPL were all defeated by T1 at Worlds 2023, along with various other objective and subjective factors, has clearly diminished the appeal of the LPL tournament. According to statistics from Esports Chart, the LPL Spring 2024 saw an unprecedented low viewership on international broadcasting platforms. Specifically, this tournament only garnered 292k viewers (peak view), even lower than VCS (312.5k peak view).

Of course, the statistics from this site do not reflect the numbers from domestic broadcasting platforms in LPL. But one thing can be seen: international audiences may gradually be losing interest in the top League of Legends tournament in China. In previous years, familiar names like Uzi and TheShy were still present, but these players have completely disappeared. Not to mention, LPL currently seems to be a race between JD Gaming and Bilibili Gaming, with Top Esports possibly joining this season. Meanwhile, long-dominant teams with large fanbases (Edward Gaming, Royal Never Give Up) are sliding down the rankings, which has further diminished foreign interest in the LPL.

Meanwhile, LCK Spring 2024 has seen unprecedented numbers with over 2.60 million views at its peak. It remains a “two-horse race” between T1 and Gen.G, but clearly, LCK is showing a significantly superior appeal compared to LPL. Meanwhile, VCS is also gaining attention, partly due to the misconduct allegations and partly because of the return of several superstars, including SofM, in the recent playoffs.

At this moment, LPL is gradually declining both in quality and appeal. MSI 2024 could be an opportunity for teams in the region to strive to “rescue” the tournament. But if they continue to be defeated by representatives of LCK, there is a high possibility that LPL will face another disappointing Summer season.
