The format of the LCK Cup 2026 has changed, benefiting top teams like T1 and Gen.G
The year 2026 marks another season of the LCK Cup, following its debut last year, which aimed to trial the Fearless Draft mechanism and prepare representatives for the upcoming First Stand. Besides LCK’s intention to make this an annual event, the LCK Cup is gradually attracting more audience attention. However, currently, after two days of competition, the Baron group of Gen.G and T1 is facing difficulties, causing concern among many fans of these teams.
As of now, four matches have been played, and apart from T1, all teams in the Baron group have competed, but only Gen.G has secured a victory. Even when leading, teams from the Baron group have failed to close out their matches. Therefore, with a poor overall record, unless Gen.G and T1 win all their remaining matches, any other results will mean the Baron group ends up as a losing group after the group stage.
However, Gen.G and T1 might be the two teams with relatively less pressure in this group. It will be very difficult for the top two positions in the group to slip from the hands of T1 and Gen.G. According to the new format, the top two teams from the winning group and one team from the losing group will advance to the Playoffs. The remaining three teams from the winning group and the teams finishing 2nd to 4th in the losing group will enter the Play-in.
Thus, the format of 2026 has become somewhat “easier” and the question now is: which team will top the losing group.
The battle will be a contest exclusive to T1 – Gen.G
Despite the changes in the format, only one team will benefit from the losing group. Therefore, unless anything unexpected occurs, T1 and Gen.G will have to compete for the top spot in the group. Gen.G has already secured their first victory. As for T1, they will step into a showdown with HLE on the afternoon of January 16 – arguably the toughest opponent in the Elder group to determine their own fate.
