On September 25th, the Teamfight Tactics Expansion Season 2 tournament of the Chinese server crowned its champion, the super player qituX. He achieved a top 1 position in 3 out of 4 rounds on the final day of competition to claim this prestigious title. Notably, the team compositions that qituX used were rarely seen in the current meta. Let’s explore what those compositions were!

Mages – Zombies
After numerous nerfs to the tankiness of the Aberrant Zombies, the Mages – Zombies composition disappeared from the meta for a long time. Even the strongest Mage unit, Vel’Koz, was no longer a popular choice for the carry position as units like Lucian, Aphelios, and Draven became too hot. Recognizing this, qituX made a relatively risky move by using a team of 4 Mages in the first match of the Finals and secured a top 1.

Besides the composition construction issue, you can learn from qituX’s early use of the Trap Claw item with the Mages – Zombies team. We must remember that in this composition, the number of frontline champions is quite limited. Therefore, Trap Claw is an extremely important item to protect Vel’Koz and the Mage units so they don’t get interrupted while casting and can eliminate opponents quickly.

6 Legionnaires
With Mordekaiser being removed in Season 5.5, the 6 Legionnaires composition appears to be a very risky play without sufficient tankiness in the frontline. However, you can still build this composition to secure a top 1 position in the match if you get a 2-star Irelia early. You should even consider crafting strong tank items like Thornmail and Dragon Claw for this unit to shield the backline carries.

If you receive the Legionnaire emblem, don’t be greedy about giving it to a damage-oriented unit like Jax or Viego at the end of the game. What the Legionnaires composition always lacks is crowd control effects and good tank units. Therefore, units like Thresh, Nautilus, Rell… are the best candidates to hold the Legionnaire emblem for this composition.

Akshan – Armored
As mentioned above, champions like Lucian and Aphelios are current hot carries in the meta and are fiercely contested. If you find yourself rolling a lot of gold but only getting a 1-star Aphelios, the necessary action is to consider shifting to another carry. Akshan is a promising name since this unit can effectively utilize the items you’ve crafted for Aphelios beforehand.

To help Akshan deal damage most effectively, players need to pair this unit with Armored champions at the highest threshold possible. With the Heroic Leap skill, Akshan often needs to engage with the enemy team’s damage sources. At that point, the additional armor will help this unit be durable enough to survive, cast more times, and clean up the battlefield.
