2022 World Championship: A Tournament Uniting Many Champions of the League of Legends Scene

(The Fatherland) - The 2022 World Championship is perhaps the tournament that brings together the most champions from top international competitions to date.

The most anticipated international tournament of 2022 for the League of Legends (LoL) – The 2022 World Championship (Worlds 2022) is just a few days away from officially kicking off. Almost all teams are ready to enter the championship race. Meanwhile, the VCS community is still eagerly waiting for visa news from GAM Esports (GAM) and Saigon Buffalo (SGB).

Not only does this tournament represent the first opportunity for the VCS region to return after many years of absence, but Worlds 2022 also gathers many familiar names. Notable teams include T1, Gen.G Esports (Gen.G), DWG KIA (DK), Royal Never Give Up (RNG), G2 Esports (G2), Fnatic (FNC)… Additionally, there are teams that have returned to this stage after a long time, such as Top Esports (TES) and JD Gaming (JDG)… All of this creates a tournament that is more anticipated than ever.

Recently, the League of Legends community has been gathering information about the teams participating in the upcoming Worlds 2022 and discovered many interesting facts. First, this tournament features 8 World Championship titles in League of Legends history. The teams holding these titles include SKT T1/T1 (3 times), Fnatic (1 time), EDward Gaming (EDG) (1 time), Samsung Galaxy/Gen.G (2 times), and DK (1 time).

However, notably at Worlds 2022, all 7 MSI champions in the history of this tournament are fully represented. They include SKT T1/T1 (2 times), RNG (3 times), G2 (1 time), and EDG (1 time). This is the first Worlds tournament where all teams that have previously won the MSI are fully present. Since the MSI tournament began in 2015, there have always been teams that had previously won this tournament missing. At Worlds 2021, the MSI champion that did not participate was G2.

In this tournament, 3 World Championship champions are absent (including Taipei Assassins (TPA), Invictus Gaming (IG), and FunPlus Phoenix (FPX)). However, all three have contributed veterans who were with them when they triumphed in previous Worlds. These include Tian and JackeyLove – the duo currently competing under TES. And Achie – the veteran from TPA who is now the coach of CTBC Flying Oyster from the PCS region.

Another factor that excites the community: The two players with the most World Championship titles are both present at Worlds 2022 and in the same team. They are Faker and Bengi. This duo, once considered the most synchronized pair in League of Legends history, are now fighting for T1. The only difference is that Faker is still a player while Bengi has become the head coach for his former teammate.

It can be said that Worlds 2022 is proving to be a tournament worthy of the expectations of the League of Legends community, both in terms of scale and the quality of each participating name.
