There’s a logic everyone knows when climbing ranks: when you win, you gain rank points, and conversely, you lose points when you lose. However, things aren’t that simple; League of Legends has something called hidden MMR or hidden Elo, which affects the points added or deducted from a player after each match. The “Hell Elo” situation occurs when the hidden points are too low, and players will gain fewer points than usual when they win.

However, the most absurd thing about this hidden MMR system is that sometimes you can win but still lose points, which must feel incredibly frustrating for gamers when you put in all that effort only to end up losing points instead. Recently, a streamer who mains Viktor faced this situation, and the community immediately captured that moment to mock Riot Games and their ranking system.

“You need to win more, okay?” – Riot 2020.
“I gained 17 points for a win, but lost 20 points for a loss. How can I change this?”
Riot: “The short answer is to just keep winning.” So, what now, Rito?
A few days ago, my champion select was fine, but the game never started. The system counted me as AFK and I lost 17 points. I even restarted the client as soon as I could, but the game still wouldn’t run, what can I do?
Well, according to Rito, it’s because you didn’t win enough, yeah True Story (a famous meme).
That’s why this streamer created a new account.

Indeed, Riot Games has put its foot in its mouth when addressing the ranking and MMR issues; what gamers want here isn’t tips on climbing ranks, they need a clear ranking system rather than being influenced by something obscure like hidden MMR. Interestingly, another game within League of Legends, Teamfight Tactics, has a much clearer points system for gaining and losing ranks compared to League of Legends itself.

Perhaps after the meme about 200 years of experience in just designing terrible games, “Keep Winning” will be the next phrase the community uses to ridicule Riot Games about their ranking system for a long time to come.
