Although they had to stop quite early, the performance from the team made Vietnamese fans proud, especially after defeating the runner-up from the Chinese region – TOP Esports (TES). In that memorable match, GAM chose a jungle carry composition with Levi’s signature pick, Karthus, making it difficult for their opponents by continuously creating fierce team fights. The whole team controlled objectives and played effectively, successfully winning against TES. Additionally, marksman Sty1e also proved himself with an impressive performance.
After the thrilling match, GAM’s captain Levi received a lot of attention from the audience. The Beginning of a Tenacious Captain
For fans of League of Legends in Vietnam, no one is unfamiliar with Levi, a name that has become too familiar in VCS tournaments. Levi’s full name is Đỗ Duy Khánh, born in 1997 in Bắc Ninh. He joined the Esports scene competing in League of Legends professionally in 2016 while still playing for Hanoi SkyRed. After an impressive performance with the champion Lee Sin at the 2016 World All-Stars, Levi’s career began to open a new chapter. From there, he caught the attention of coach Tinikun.
In Spring 2017, Levi officially signed a contract and played for Gigabytes Marines (GAM), a team that gathered many of the best stars in Vietnam at that time. With skill and intelligence, Levi quickly caught up with the team and brought in consecutive victories such as VCS A 2017, champions of GPL Spring, Summer 2017, and even made it to the Mid Season Invitational 2017 (MSI 2017) finishing in 6th place, bringing Vietnam’s representative to the group stage of Worlds 2017 for the first time. Moreover, Levi’s aggressive playstyle during team fights captivated League of Legends fans worldwide during that time.
Seeking Opportunities with Foreign Teams, but His True Love Remains GAM
After the resounding success with GAM, Levi played for foreign teams 100 Thieves and JD Gaming twice, but language barriers and playstyle differences prevented the top VCS jungler from finding success and he decided to return to his old home GAM in Summer 2019. Back with GAM, Levi and teammate Zeros created a devastating top lane that helped GAM win VCS and brought him to the Worlds group stage for the second time. This return also marked Levi’s second participation in Worlds, although it didn’t meet expectations, it helped the whole team gain experience for future competitions.
It’s clear that Levi truly shines when playing and competing with GAM. Evidence of this is in 2020, despite not being highly rated, the team made a comeback to win 3-2, reaching the finals of VCS Summer 2020, which meant GAM would certainly receive a reward from Worlds 2020, even though they couldn’t compete. This marked GAM’s third appearance at Worlds.
In 2021, due to the impact of the pandemic, GAM could not participate in two major international tournaments, Worlds and MSI, even facing the risk of dissolution. However, the team did not give up and continued to stand by each other until now.
Outstandingly Winning Gold at SEA Games 31, While Having a Memorable Fourth Journey at Worlds 2022
At the recent SEA Games 31, GAM excellently defeated Thailand to bring home the gold medal for Vietnam. This is the most outstanding achievement in 2022 for Levi and his teammates. For each player, despite participating in many international tournaments and winning championships, the SEA Games gold medal remains the most prestigious and the biggest goal for them to strive for. For Levi, he has strongly asserted in the media: “Going to MSI only represents VCS, but participating in the SEA Games represents the entire nation.”
Not disappointing the expectations of the audience, Levi and GAM excellently fulfilled the goal of winning gold, opening a new chapter for League of Legends in Vietnam, previously the entire team had also won VCS Spring 2022.
After the SEA Games gold medal, Levi and his teammates returned to the VCS Summer 2022 stage, continuing to win the championship and earn a spot at Worlds 2022. It can be said that Worlds 2022 is the most memorable World Championship for both GAM and Levi. Right from the visa application to the USA, GAM faced some issues, but everything was resolved by Riot, allowing the team to attend Worlds as initially planned. Here, although they had to stop early, Levi and his teammates still left a strong impression on the audience with their spectacular victory over TES.
