In a development video released by Riot Games a few weeks ago, they confirmed that Teamfight Tactics will have a significant update in the middle of the patch. Compared to Season 2, the scale will be much larger, with updates to the Spirit system for the duo Lucian – Senna or the Moon Tribe with Leona and Karma.

Basically, Riot Games only hinted that there would be new champions, new traits – systems… but nothing specific. However, just hours ago, in response to player questions on Twitter, Riot Mortdog – the lead designer of Teamfight Tactics – revealed some new details about the upcoming update, suggesting it could revive some currently neglected team compositions.

Riot Mortdog: “I am really excited to see the development of this update. Right now, this is the most diverse version that Teamfight Tactics has ever had, with so many compositions capable of winning. Of course, there will be updates, and this version will also have to pass through, some people call it the best patch, while others call it the worst version.”
Youtuber BunnyMiffin: “I think diversity is good, but mostly compositions that only support one player aren’t great. It makes people feel like they’re being tricked by the meta. Maybe increasing the champion pool will help? I’m not so sure.”
Riot Mortdog: “Currently, we are testing increasing the 3-cost champion pool to 18 champions, allowing two players in a match to reach 3 stars with the same 3-cost champion. This is just an experiment, so it may not be implemented.”
A player asked: “I really like this patch, but I have a serious question about some compositions that rely too much on 5-cost champions like Super Technology, Rebellion, Dark Star. It’s almost a game of chance when you do everything to roll for the 5-cost champion you need. And reaching 2 stars completely changes the game. Is there any idea to change this?”
Riot Mortdog: “Yes, we are making some changes aimed at that and will launch in the mid-patch update.”

With what Riot Mortdog has answered, we can understand that the mid-patch update will touch almost everything in the game, from changes in the champion pool, new traits – systems, or new champions being introduced. Expanding the 3-cost champion pool to 18 pieces will increase the chance of getting the necessary pieces. Essentially, most 3-cost units in Season 3 serve a versatile purpose, adding effects or strength to your composition. Having a 3-cost 2-star unit early on will give you confidence and stability in the mid-game.

Moreover, we can hope that Riot Games will introduce more units for Super Technology, Rebellion, or Dark Star to strengthen these compositions. The common point of all three teams is that they rely on 5-cost units, and while it may not be necessary to stand in enough combos, to be strong you must have Xerath when playing Dark Star, Aurelion Sol when playing Rebellion, and Ekko is essential for Super Technology.

Currently, the hyper-roll meta is spreading rapidly; if you are not strong enough in the mid-game, it is very easy to lose health and die too early. Adding units that are not 5-cost but can still activate the large traits mentioned above will make that composition stronger in the mid-game. After all, we still have to wait for patch 10.12 to know exactly what new things will appear.
