Alongside the exciting developments of Worlds 2023, notable updates in League of Legends have also captured the community’s attention. Particularly in patch 13.22, Riot Games made adjustments to limit the “spam” of the question mark Ping in League of Legends. This change is Riot’s next move in finding ways to reduce the long-standing toxicity present in this game.

However, this change led to a regrettable incident involving the Lead Game Designer – Riot Phreak. In his latest video, Riot Phreak shared that he received numerous critical messages, even death threats from the community. As a result, he decided to halt all social media activities for the time being.

The main reason for the backlash against Riot Phreak stems from his advice following the Ping system changes. Riot Phreak suggested that players do not need to “spam” Pings at teammates when they can use the chat box to communicate with them. This advice from Riot Phreak sparked lively discussions in the community, with players deeming it rather “counterintuitive”.

Moreover, the phrase “Karthus uses his ultimate” that Riot Phreak used as an example turned into quite a humorous meme. If it had ended there, there wouldn’t have been any issues. Unfortunately, many toxic League of Legends players sent critical messages, even threats towards Riot Phreak, prompting him to make the regrettable announcement mentioned above.

It’s worth noting that Riot Phreak is one of the prominent figures in League of Legends. He commented during the first Worlds back in 2011 and has dedicated his career to the game. By 2022, Riot Phreak transitioned to a role in League of Legends development and reached the position of Lead Game Designer. He frequently releases videos explaining patches and helps League of Legends players understand the development team’s perspective.

Therefore, having harsh criticisms or threats towards Riot Phreak is not good at all. This incident only highlights that the League of Legends community has too many toxic players and that strong measures from Riot are a necessary solution. Hopefully, in the future, similar incidents will not occur with other Riot staff.
