In a game with a massive player base like League of Legends, the presence of “toxic” players is something that is hard to avoid. Therefore, Riot Games has implemented a punishment system to hold these players accountable for their bad behavior. Actions ranging from game sabotage to harsh language in the chat can lead to account bans.

However, Riot’s punishment system has had many questionable decisions that have left the community frustrated. Recently, one gamer was even banned just for mentioning an item name in the chat. Specifically, a player named ArekXander advised his teammates not to engage with Samira because the opponent had just purchased Serrated Dirk.
What seemed like a completely normal chat message led to this player receiving an account ban shortly thereafter. When ArekXander received a response from Riot regarding his ban, he learned the reason for the punishment. It is likely that Riot’s system flagged the name “Dirk” (referring to Serrated Dirk) as a sensitive term, leading to the unfortunate account ban for this “unlucky” player.

The term “Dirk” in English is also used to refer to a type of knife in criminal cases. Perhaps Riot’s punishment system took this into account and flagged it as a highly violent term, resulting in ArekXander’s account ban. However, in the context of League of Legends, this term is commonly understood by players as referring to the item Serrated Dirk. Given that this player’s statement was not malicious, the account ban seems completely unreasonable.

This may serve as a significant lesson for Riot in terms of their punishment process, as they need to carefully consider cases rather than making automated conclusions. Hopefully, the “unlucky” ArekXander will soon be vindicated and return to enjoying League of Legends.
