Is the Mid Lane in League of Legends Being Dominated?
If you follow the professional League of Legends tournaments, fans can easily recognize the dominance of Marksmen in the Mid Lane. After champions like Corki and Tristana were nerfed, Lucian and sometimes even Zeri and Draven have appeared in solo lane positions. This inadvertently overshadows the role of traditional Mages.

This meta forces Mid Lane players to adapt to help their teams secure victories. However, in ShowMaker’s case, he seems to be quite unhappy with the current League of Legends meta. In a recent stream, ShowMaker harshly criticized Riot, even comparing the current meta to “garbage.”
ShowMaker Expresses Extreme Dissatisfaction with the Current Mid Lane Meta in League of Legends.
“The essence of League of Legends is that Mages should be in the Mid Lane. Many powerful champions have helped this position shine, such as Syndra and Orianna. They represent the characteristics and foundation of League of Legends. This is far from the meta with too many Marksmen in the Mid Lane right now. This version feels like ‘garbage’ to me and I don’t want to play it at all,” ShowMaker shared with frustration.

One of the main reasons for the strong rise of Marksmen in solo lanes is that Riot has buffed this class of champions too much. Especially in patch 14.10, when a series of Marksman items were significantly strengthened. This has pushed the power threshold of this class too high and allowed teams to use Marksmen to dominate Mages in the Mid Lane. Perhaps this is why ShowMaker compared the League of Legends meta to ‘garbage’ as mentioned.

For other players like Chovy and Faker, they quickly found ways to adapt to this meta. However, ShowMaker has gone against the trend of the tournament by remaining loyal to traditional Mages. At the LCK Summer 2024, the 3 champions ShowMaker picked most frequently were Taliyah, LeBlanc, and Azir. Although Tristana is very strong, he has only used her 3 times in this tournament.

This choice, somewhat against the current meta, has inadvertently caused DK to face many difficulties against strong teams. Notably, DK has lost all 3 recent matchups against T1, HLE, and Gen.G. This is clearly reflected in the ban/pick phase when DK’s opponents do not need to ban strong Marksmen in the Mid Lane and can freely target other positions.

Fairly speaking, allowing Marksmen to be too strong in the current meta is indeed partly Riot’s fault. What they need to do is adjust the Marksman items to reduce the power of this class. However, for that to happen will take time, and ShowMaker should find ways to adapt to the meta while waiting for changes from Riot. Otherwise, DK will have to pay a hefty price in the upcoming major battles.
