Riot Games Leaders Shower Praise on T1 and LCK
As we know, T1 recently clinched the championship title at the World Championship 2024 after a thrilling 3-2 victory over BLG. This championship reaffirms the strength and resilience of T1 in the prestigious World Championship arena. Additionally, Faker and his teammates shattered numerous tournament records and became the first team to win the World Championship with all four seed positions.

Not stopping there, T1’s reputation has significantly contributed to promoting the League of Legends esports scene worldwide. Coupled with their impressive achievements, T1 specifically and the LCK tournament in general have received countless accolades from the very leaders of Riot Games. Specifically, Riot’s Esports CEO – John Needham recently shared with the press that players cannot describe League of Legends without mentioning T1 and LCK.

“LCK is a vital and irreplaceable region of League of Legends. The highest concurrent viewer count worldwide reached 45 million (excluding China). At the 2023 World Championship Finals, over 130 thousand fans participated, and I still vividly remember that. This year T1 is champion again, bringing me so many wonderful emotions.
LCK plays a significant role in the future development of League of Legends. With a living legend like Faker, LCK has a massive influence as it is broadcast in seven different languages. League of Legends has dominated the PC Bang market share in South Korea for 323 consecutive weeks, with the average weekly playtime of the gaming community reaching 16.92 million hours. Now, you cannot fully describe League of Legends without mentioning T1 and LCK,” – John Needham shared with the press.

Riot’s Comments on T1 and LCK Draw Criticism from LPL Fans
Indeed, given the significant impact of T1 and the LCK tournament, one would think that CEO John Needham’s comments were quite understandable. However, this interview response from Riot Games has led many fans and media in the LPL to feel “burned”. The reason stems from their belief that Riot Games completely overlooked the LPL region when discussing the development of League of Legends, despite its substantial contributions.

Indeed, to have a competitive League of Legends environment as captivating as it is today, the development of LCK in general and T1 in particular is not enough. Strong teams from LPL like EDG, FPX, IG, RNG in the past or BLG, TES currently have also significantly contributed to creating a counterbalance to LCK. Moreover, League of Legends is a highly developed game in the LPL region with a massive player base. Therefore, it is easy to understand why LPL fans feel “burned” and criticize Riot’s CEO for overlooking their region while praising T1 and LCK.

Fairly speaking, CEO John Needham’s comments are understandable given the LCK’s overwhelming international performance in 2024. This tournament currently boasts both the MSI champion (Gen.G) and the World Championship champion (T1), showcasing a complete dominance over LPL. Perhaps the representatives of LPL need to work harder to bring glory to their region if they wish to gain recognition from Riot as well as the League of Legends community.
