Since its launch in the gaming community, Riot has introduced many features to League of Legends, while also removing or modifying numerous existing features. Of course, not every change made to League of Legends has been well-received by the community. However, there are quite a few features that have become indispensable in the League of Legends community specifically and can even affect players’ daily lives. One such familiar element is the Mastery Points system.

In reality, the higher the Mastery Points, the more it shows that the player is truly knowledgeable about their chosen champion, which can also help teammates assess the likelihood of winning or losing when a player picks a certain champion. Additionally, the mastery points system gives players mastery icons. Terms like “showing off Mastery” or “Mastery 7” have become very familiar, even being applied outside of the game when players refer to someone with an evaluative implication.

However, all the benefits of Mastery Points only include the factors mentioned above and… that’s it. Riot itself recently acknowledged: “Players who have invested their time and effort into a champion deserve to be recognized for their contributions. We know that our current Champion Mastery system is not functioning well enough and we are looking for upgrades in 2024.”

It can be understood that in the new year, players who have reached Mastery Points for a champion at a certain milestone may receive special rewards from Riot. This is clearly a move by Riot to attract old players while encouraging new players to “try hard” even more. However, what these rewards will be remains a mystery.

The Mastery Points system is one of the most evident indicators of players’ investment, effort, and commitment to League of Legends. Therefore, Riot has started to recognize the importance of this mechanism, which was once seen as merely “for fun” and is now worthy of greater investment.
