In League of Legends, there are many champions divided into different classes (groups). Assassins typically have low health and armor, but in return, they possess high mobility and damage. Marksmen, on the other hand, have low movement speed but some are quite mobile and have long-range abilities. However, one very important class that has a rather boring mechanic that many players have pointed out is the Fighter.

In recent years, Fighter champions have been considered too strong compared to the nature of needing sturdiness along with the ability to initiate fights and absorb damage. Champions like Jax, Wukong, or K’Sante can even “carry” the damage of the entire team. Notably, these champions have many item build paths and are not limited to any particular playstyle. However, the mechanic that frustrates players with Fighters is their ability to deal area damage to surrounding targets in a circular pattern, which has been repeated since the early days of League of Legends.

To illustrate, abilities like Judgment (Garen), Cyclone (Wukong), or Counter Strike (Jax) all have mechanics that charge into the enemy formation to maximize damage dealt. Excluding Garen, who has long disappeared from the professional scene, both Wukong and Jax are currently among the most popular champions. In addition to these names, there are also Mordekaiser or Shyvana who have similar mechanics.

Explaining this, some opinions suggest that designing wide-area skills based on a circular mechanic around the champion is simple and fits the nature of that champion. Since the role of a Fighter is always to charge into the enemy, this is seen as a mechanism to optimize the capabilities of these champions. The only issue is that Riot has repeated this too many times, leading to a sense of monotony. It wasn’t until later that there were changes like Hecarim or K’Sante, which proved effective.

Perhaps, Riot will continue with the “circular damage” mechanics for champions capable of multi-target attacks. Nonetheless, the community’s opinions are also worth considering, and Riot may also take into account new elements in the future, notably with the upcoming champion Naafiri.
