Recently, Riot Games released short trailers introducing the Star Guardian event, giving us our first look at the main character for this event – Kai’Sa. Additionally, the introductory video hinted at many details regarding the appearance of other characters and their relationships within the Star Guardian universe. All of this was preparing for a massive event that would span several patches in League of Legends.

However, after the update yesterday (June 24) on the PBE server, this event left players feeling disappointed. The reason is that Riot Games was too lazy in designing the event, simply bringing back the Ultimate Spellbook mode. Meanwhile, players had high hopes for a gameplay mode directly related to the event, such as using Star Guardians to fight against Void creatures.

In fact, in a post complaining about this issue on Reddit, players expressed feeling betrayed by Riot’s actions. Many other players shared this viewpoint and even mocked Riot, suggesting that they were deliberately making it easier for players to switch to more casual RPGs in the future.
It’s sad that AI modes will never return. For me, the Space Squad mode was something incredibly precious.
Riot is making their players endure boredom so that they can easily switch to those easier RPG games later on.
Honestly, Space Squad was the best event. You got to play a very challenging mode and were gifted free skins as well.

In fact, Riot Games had previously published an article stating that they would no longer create special gameplay modes as they did not yield much profit for them. Moreover, Riot provided data showing that many players would abandon special modes after just 1-2 tries. Therefore, they concluded that designing these modes wasn’t worth the time and effort invested.
However, for a highly anticipated event like Star Guardian, it is hard to accept that Riot designed it so formulaically that they only reopened the Ultimate Spellbook. Remember that League of Legends players are already accustomed to the gameplay of this game, so understanding the event’s storyline through dialogues like the Ruined King event is not sufficient. It is unfortunate that Riot did not see it this way, leading to their event facing criticism from League of Legends players themselves.
