LoL May Introduce New Ranking System, Players Could Escape the “Challenger Skill but Gold Rank” Situation

The new ranking system could be the solution for high-skilled LoL players who are struggling.

One of the most appealing mechanisms of LoL in particular and many other games in general is the Ranking mode (also known as rank). The rank levels create a competitive atmosphere for players, making them feel more engaged when entering the game for matches. However, for a long time, the Ranking mechanism in LoL and many other games, especially team-based ones, has caused quite a bit of frustration. This is particularly true when players don’t have much time to try hard but end up with toxic teammates or game-throwers.

Due to the influence of many external factors, the journey of climbing ranks is not easy at all. Of course, players with real skill can still achieve high ranks. However, many players have experienced the frustrating situation of feeling “outmatched”. When they put in effort, but their teammates lose motivation too early or intentionally throw the game, resulting in outcomes that are not desired. This leads to many players often lamenting that they have the skills of a Challenger but their rank is Gold.

However, the problem of toxicity and game-throwing has become so prevalent that players sometimes have to 'Mute All' to enjoy the game

Recently, according to some information from the LoL community, it appears that Riot will launch a new ranking mechanism called TrueSkill 2. Accordingly, starting in 2024, the new MMR mechanism will be adjusted to be simpler while accurately assessing the skills and capabilities of players. Meanwhile, players will no longer have to worry about falling into “elo hell” if they happen to have some unwanted matches or feed more than usual.

Riot may launch TrueSkill 2 and introduce a completely new MMR mechanism next year, but it remains unclear when exactly this will happen. At the same time, Riot also assures that the new mechanism will calculate more accurately and bring players back to the rank level they deserve.

Additionally, the calculation of LP will change based on other metrics in the match, such as KDA. This means that if a player has many kills in a match and a high KDA, the new mechanism will assess that player higher compared to before, where many factors like skill, map awareness, and control ward usage were also taken into account. Those metrics are certainly not easy for an average-skilled player. However, previously, if these metrics were not “good enough”, a player could remain stuck in Silver or Gold for a long time.

Many players are excited about the upcoming prospects but are also curious when TrueSkill 2 will officially be implemented

However, Riot has only released information about the new mechanism, and it is not certain that TrueSkill 2 will launch alongside the Preseason 2024. But if it can help players escape the “Challenger skill but Gold rank” situation, it will undoubtedly be a mechanism warmly welcomed by the LoL community.
