Historically, teams in the LCK are known for their tight gameplay, methodical control, which unfortunately leads to matches often having very few kills, skirmishes, and unexpected situations. This has resulted in the perception that the LCK is a “boring”, “sleep-inducing” tournament gradually taking shape in the League of Legends community.

However, this is only true in a few specific matches; after experiencing numerous losses with their control-oriented playstyle, LCK teams have gradually adapted to the new meta and gameplay. Of course, they still maintain their control, but teams have become much bolder in making plays and initiating fights early on. A prime example is Game 3 of the match between T1 and Afreeca Freecs, which had a total of 41 kills, significantly higher than the traditional LCK standard.

If LCK isn’t that boring, then what tournament holds the title of “ultimate sleep-inducer”? Surprisingly, the answer is the LEC – Europe. Many may not believe it, but the numbers don’t lie; the LEC averages only 22 kills, with the highest kill match stopping at just 34. It’s worth noting that even smaller tournaments like CBLOL or PCS have higher average kills.

The LEC is facing a creativity issue, as the excitement in this region mainly came from the unconventional and extremely unique playstyle of G2 Esports. However, in the current summer split, the “quirkiness” of this “circus team” is no longer present; losing this aspect, LEC has reverted to its strategy-heavy nature. This is partly due to adjustments from Riot Games and also because the game meta has become saturated, making it difficult to find playstyles that are both strong and distinct.

The best example of G2 Esports’ dwindling creativity is Wunder, the “quirky champion” of Europe, who no longer showcases unique plays like Soraka or Janna as in the spring split. Instead, he’s opting for more familiar champions like Wukong, Mordekaiser, or Sett. The consequences are evident on the LEC standings, with G2 Esports no longer dominating the tournament and currently sitting in 3rd place.

A small note is that LCS – North America also has poor statistics like the LEC; however, this league does have a match with 41 kills, thus narrowly avoiding this not-so-flattering title. Perhaps it’s time to put an end to the stereotype of a “sleepy” LCK.
