In recent years, when mentioning the Top Lane in LCK, the name that comes to many fans’ minds is T1’s Zeus, followed closely by Doran from Gen.G. Among all the top laners in the current LCK, these are arguably the two most noteworthy names. Except for Nuguri, who has retired, the remaining players have quite a few issues. Additionally, T1 (with Zeus) and Gen.G (with Doran) frequently appear on the list of championship contenders for the international tournaments they participate in.

While Doran has been around for a long time and is considered a veteran Top Laner, having built his reputation during his time with Griffin, Zeus is a new factor. He is only in his second official season with T1. Nonetheless, Zeus has already participated in 5 finals with T1, including both domestic and international tournaments. However, he only has the LCK Spring 2022 championship title to his name. For a top laner with high expectations, that’s quite underwhelming.

This isn’t the first time the top lane issue of the LCK has been brought up for discussion. Previously, this region was known for producing many quality top laners (MaRin, Duke, CuVee, Impact…), but currently, they seem to have no reliable players. Kiin is getting older, and both Canna and Doran appear to have peaked and are experiencing inconsistent performance.
As for Zeus, he is often compared to MaRin when T1 goes on a winning streak. However, Zeus’s biggest weakness lies in his mentality and competitive spirit. This is undoubtedly the reason why he may not yet measure up to MaRin. The legendary captain of T1 was even a pillar, leading his teammates to the World Championship title in 2015.

Additionally, we can mention Kingen – the reigning World Champion from 2022. However, last year’s tournament was perhaps the pinnacle of Kingen’s performance. He has yet to show much while wearing the new colors of Hanwha Life Esports. Kingen also exhibits a rather limited champion pool, and when his favorite champion Aatrox was nerfed, he also fell off.
Looking over at the LPL, many LCK fans feel envious. Currently in the LPL, there is no shortage of top laners from excellent to promising. Bin and 369 have proven themselves in both international and domestic tournaments recently. Ale is always ready to surprise, while LPL also has the very promising YSKM. Not to mention, on a good day, TheShy or Wayward can completely make their opponents regret.

In the past, the top lane challenge never posed a problem for the LCK when they had many renowned names. However, currently, it seems that fans can only hope their players maintain stable performance and a truly strong mentality. Because the LPL is very strong and ready to punish any mistakes, no matter how small, from their Korean counterparts.
