According to disclosures from Riot Games, specifically the official League of Legends portal – LoL Esports, there are less than 24 hours left until the theme MV for the 2021 Worlds tournament is officially released. As expected, Faker will once again appear in this MV, as a still image from the upcoming music piece by “Riot Entertainment” has revealed Faker accompanied by the banner “The Undying King of LCK”.
This marks the fourth consecutive year since the 2018 Worlds that Faker has participated in music publications promoting the event, with previous MVs: RISE (2018 Worlds), Phoenix (2019 Worlds), Take Over (2020 Worlds), and the upcoming release for the 2021 Worlds, even though he hasn’t participated in the tournament every year.
In the previous three MVs, Faker has played various “roles”; in RISE, he was the “final boss” in the journey to conquer the 2017 World Championship of Ambition. In Phoenix, he, along with Rookie and Caps, were stars trying to overcome the shadow of failure to regain their peak status. Meanwhile, in Take Over, Faker served as a living monument, guiding future generations of gamers on their quest for glory.
It’s not hard to understand why Riot Games always seeks to make Faker the central figure in CKTG MVs, even when he isn’t participating in the tournament (2018 and 2020 Worlds), simply because Faker is a name that guarantees the appeal of every tournament and publication related to League of Legends.
However, Riot’s benefit from “exploiting” Faker has turned into a concern for fans about an unshakable curse. Specifically, since Legends Never Die (2017 Worlds), subsequent MVs have featured characters modeled after real-life superstars, and since RISE in 2018, any player mentioned by Riot in the MV seems to… flop.
From Ambition, Uzi, Faker, Rookie to Caps… by some coincidence, they all seem to have bad luck with the championship cup, every time they are named by Riot in the music works (Rookie won the 2018 Worlds but appeared in Phoenix and was eliminated in the semifinals of the 2019 Worlds, Ambition won the 2017 Worlds but exited right from the group stage of the 2018 Worlds after being the main character of RISE, Caps lost in two consecutive finals in 2018 and 2019…).
Therefore, fans are understandably worried to learn that Riot continues to feature Faker in the MV, because if we follow that “spiritual” factor to speculate on results, then T1’s chances of winning this year seem to be “no hope” already.
