For those who may not know, whenever League of Legends has an event accompanied by a new skin line, Riot releases an item called the Event Pass. This item allows you to earn event points every time you play League of Legends and use them to exchange for Prestige skins or other items like borders, icons, chromas, etc. Additionally, the Event Pass also comes with missions that help players earn more event points.

This Event Pass system was working quite well until Riot Games decided to change it during the 2021 Elegant event. Basically, instead of earning points after each game, you will now accumulate playtime to reach a certain threshold to earn event points. Moreover, the special weekly missions for earning additional points have completely disappeared. This change makes the number of event points that players can earn significantly lower than before.

Clearly, for players who are more casual or ‘grinding-oriented’, this change is extremely detrimental as they will have to spend a lot more time to accumulate enough event points to exchange for Prestige skins. The experience of using the Event Pass is also extremely poor because, as mentioned above, Riot has removed the ability for players to earn points after each match. In fact, when players voiced their concerns on Reddit, the post was deleted to “cover up” the terrible experience mentioned earlier.

Essentially, the “new” Event Pass system from Riot has been criticized since its announcement. From the very beginning, players have opposed it due to the longer time required to grind enough points to exchange for items in the new Event Pass compared to before. However, Riot seems to have completely ignored this feedback and went ahead with the implementation for the Elegant event.
Hopefully, after this disastrous launch, Riot Games will listen to the community and make reasonable changes for future events. They might consider increasing the speed of completing Event Pass missions so that the time to acquire items in the store returns to what it was during previous events. If Riot continues to leave the Event Pass in its current terrible state, it won’t be long before players turn their backs on their events altogether.
