Before yesterday’s match on January 29, Gen.G and T1 were the two teams leading the LCK Spring 2022 with an undefeated record. However, after Gen.G suffered a surprising defeat to KT Rolster, T1 is now the only team that has not lost any matches in the LCK. In fact, Gen.G even faced a clean sweep of 0-2 on a day when KT Rolster played exceptionally well across several positions.

After the match between Gen.G and KT Rolster, star player Chovy unexpectedly received harsh criticism from a Western colleague. Specifically, Golden Guardians’ mid-laner Ablazeolive, after watching the match, took to his personal Twitter to state that “Chovy farms extremely well with 11 CS per minute but has the worst item build I’ve ever seen.” Even Cloud9 coach LS expressed agreement with this criticism aimed at Chovy.

There are two factors that make Chovy’s itemization choices illogical: Blade of the Ruined King, Morello’s Evil Tome is not suitable for Gen.G’s composition and Morello has very little synergy. If we pay attention, Gen.G’s composition only has one main task which is to protect Chovy and Ruler to deal damage from afar. With Viktor, the only long-range skill is E – Death Ray, which requires Viktor to have a lot of AP and penetration.
However, Morello’s Evil Tome and Blade of the Ruined King are items that have short activation times and are not suitable for Gen.G’s composition. These items do not provide enough penetration to deal damage, resulting in Chovy’s output being severely limited. There are many instances where Chovy was taken down before he could activate the empowered attack from Blade of the Ruined King.

Regarding Morello’s Evil Tome, it was essentially useless given that the sources of healing on the KT side were only Gragas or Viego (with the inclusion of Divine Sunderer, and Goredrinker). Even Aiming in this match didn’t build Bloodthirster while playing Aphelios, which didn’t assist Chovy in quickly eliminating opponents.

As we clearly saw in yesterday’s match when one of Gen.G’s main damage sources was lacking, this team faced many difficulties during skirmishes. The result was Gen.G losing the first game quite regrettably, followed by a complete defeat of 0-2 against KT Rolster. It seems that if Chovy had chosen a more standard item build like Luden’s Tempest, Rylai’s Crystal Scepter, and Void Staff, everything would have been different.
