Recently, the DragonX team in the LCK officially announced the departure of their head coach – Kim “CvMax” Dae-ho after 2 years together. Although no detailed reasons were provided, it can be understood that part of the reason for this split stems from DragonX’s poor performance in the recently concluded LCK Summer 2021 season.

During his time leading DRX, CvMax received a 5-month ban from participating in professional League of Legends due to a past abuse scandal while coaching Griffin, causing him to miss the LCK Spring 2021 season with this team. CvMax officially returned to lead DRX in the LCK Summer 2021 season after serving his ban, but ironically, the team’s performance declined not long after their coach’s comeback.
From a top 5 position in Spring, DRX plummeted straight to the bottom of the rankings, with a very lackluster performance. The main reason may be attributed to the quality of the roster, as most members are young players with limited competitive experience. However, the team’s abysmal decline in performance after just one season places some responsibility on the coach, which is unavoidable.

CvMax had a notable tenure with both Griffin and DragonX, achieving the best results of reaching the LCK finals three times in a row with GRF and participating in the World Championships in 2019 and 2020 with both teams. Regarded as a talented coach with a knack for developing young players, CvMax has also been accused of “having a tendency towards abuse” in his coaching style and faced a rather severe penalty (initially a lifetime ban, which was later reduced to 5 months due to a successful appeal).
