A Glimmer of Hope for T1
Recently, T1 suffered a defeat against Hanwha Life Esports, losing their chance to qualify for the LCK Summer Finals 2024 and now must enter the regional qualifiers to compete for a spot in the Korean representatives at this year’s World Championship. In reality, this loss was somewhat expected, as T1 has yet to demonstrate that they are truly at their peak performance despite having recently defeated Dplus KIA in the lower bracket just days ago. However, according to a fan who recently pointed out, T1 still has reasons to feel confident about the remainder of the year, as this unfortunate record has historical precedents.

Specifically, in 2016, T1 also had a fairly similar scenario this season; after winning the World Championship (2015), they faced defeat in the Summer of 2016 and only finished in 3rd place overall. However, T1 still qualified for the World Championship that same year without having to play in the regional qualifiers due to their high Championship Points (they were the Spring LCK champions prior). At the 2016 World Championship, T1 delivered an outstanding performance, marking the first time in League of Legends history that a team defended its championship title successfully. To this day, SKT T1 2016 remains the only team to achieve this feat.

A Narrow Path But Still an Opportunity for T1
First, T1 only needs to win 1 out of 2 matches in the regional qualifiers to secure a spot at the 2024 World Championship, ideally winning against Dplus KIA in their first match. Not only would this guarantee a 3rd seed position, but it would also provide T1 with more time to rest instead of having to play 2 matches back-to-back in just 2 days. Moreover, the World Championship has always been a “fertile ground” for T1, and they have never reached this tournament without at least making it to the Semifinals. Therefore, T1 fans have every reason to hope.

Additionally, while the regional qualifiers may be challenging as teams will compete with the mindset of it being their last chance, T1 has already been tempered through adversity. It may be too early to say that T1 can replicate the accomplishments of 2016, but advancing through the regional qualifiers is certainly feasible, especially since DK, KT, and FOX have all previously been defeated by T1 in this Summer season.
