Due to the impact of the pandemic, the League of Legends tournament in Korea, LCK Spring 2020, was forced to kick off without an audience right from the start of the season. However, the complex developments of the pandemic in South Korea have led Riot Korea to make the decision to temporarily postpone the tournament since March 5.
Initially, the LCK Spring 2020 group stage was scheduled to conclude on April 12 after 10 weeks of competition. However, given the current situation, it is almost certain that this plan will not be achievable. The tournament organizers have issued a press release about carefully considering various remedial solutions, including the application of online competition, similar to the approach currently taken by the LPL.
“Although we have not yet found a specific solution, we are considering all proposals, of course including playing online for the matches that have not yet been played.” – A representative from Riot Korea stated. They also mentioned that if online play is implemented, the number of matches per week could be increased to make up for the postponed period, with the hope that the tournament will finish on schedule.
In another development, the LCS and LEC tournaments have also officially announced they will hold matches without an audience after a few days of postponement. For the LEC, matches without an audience will last until the end of the Spring 2020 Finals, while in the LCS, this announcement is effective indefinitely, until the pandemic situation improves significantly.
