Although it marks the 10th anniversary of League of Legends, Riot Games faced a lot of backlash from players in 2019 regarding their in-game events and the complete removal of rotating game modes. It wasn’t until the 10th anniversary event that we could play ARURF, and of course, champion selection was not allowed, making everything entirely random.
Perhaps due to the overwhelming criticism from players, Riot Games has taken positive steps regarding special modes right from the beginning of the year. Specifically, they will be bringing modes like URF, One for All… into major in-game events as a way for players to enjoy without having to “tryhard” too much while still receiving event rewards.
However, continuously bringing back old content is not a great idea either; Riot understands they need a new game mode that meets players’ demands. Otherwise, their events will sooner or later become stale and lose creativity. Therefore, in a recent post on the League of Legends homepage, Project Director Riot Meddler provided players with extremely important information that Riot is developing a completely new game mode to be released this year.

Finally, a small note about in-game events. Part of the feedback we’ve received is that players really want an event mode where they can freely pick champions, with shorter playtime than the Summoner’s Rift or ARAM. This makes complete sense as in recent events we’ve only provided random champion modes or some limited options like the Poro King, ARURF, or One for All.
The result is that one of our current goals will be to deliver a mode during events with shorter playtime and the ability for players to freely choose champions within this year.”
With what Riot Games has announced at the beginning of the year, each major event in the game will come with a rotating game mode. We currently have One for All for the Infinite Galaxy event, and there will be another major event in the first half of this year, likely accompanied by a similar mode. After URF and One for All, could it be Monster Mash?
Nevertheless, with Riot Meddler’s promise, we can fully expect that Riot’s completely new mode will be launched soon. In reality, repeatedly playing old modes that Riot has “remixed” into different variations is indeed making players gradually bored, and they are demanding something fresher.
