A Historic Milestone for Esports

Recently, on the afternoon of February 11 (Vietnam time), the International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially delivered some very important news: Esports will have its own Olympic Games to be held in 2027. The location will be in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. According to information from the IOC, there was originally supposed to be an Olympic event in 2025, but after consideration, 2027 is deemed more suitable.

This can be seen as an important step for electronic sports. Until now, the Esports community has always hoped that Esports could be considered alongside traditional sports. However, due to its still young age, Esports can only take slow steps forward.

In 2023, Esports was included in ASIAD 2023. By 2024, Saudi Arabia held a tournament of a similar level to the World Cup. According to some assessments from experts as well as in financial reports, the tournament in Saudi Arabia has helped not a few major teams in the Esports scene reduce losses in 2024. Among them is the greatest League of Legends team – T1.

Esports Viewers Share a Common Question

Accordingly, the question many viewers are asking the IOC is: which Esports titles will be selected for the first Olympic Games dedicated to electronic sports? Because everyone understands that some Olympic rules will “restrict” the nature of many Esports titles, especially strong competitive games like League of Legends, DOTA 2…

However, many Esports titles like League of Legends will violate Olympic criteria.

In fact, not long ago, there were some reports about the IOC reviewing the Esports titles that would participate in the traditional sports Olympics. However, issues arose when some titles on this list didn’t even have players, let alone an audience. And the project continues to be postponed until the present time when new updates emerge.

A separate Olympic event for Esports will be more feasible than combining Esports into the traditional Olympics.

In another scenario, if the IOC can really create an Olympic event dedicated to Esports, it would be quite interesting. Viewers are likely looking forward to seeing superstars like Faker continue to battle in this arena, either as players or possibly having become a coach, as by 2027 the Demon King will be 31 years old.
