A few days ago, Riot Games announced a post detailing their champion development roadmap, confirming that League of Legends will introduce three new champions. Not only that, Dr. Mundo appeared at the end of the post with a completely different face than his current one, confirming that this lunatic will be reworked. Interestingly, among the four new champions mentioned, Dr. Mundo was the last to appear but was showcased with the first skill in the latest development corner article.

First, Riot Games shared what are considered Dr. Mundo’s trademarks, such as incredible tankiness, strong regeneration, and the Cleaver ability, which they plan to retain. Furthermore, Dr. Mundo’s strength lies in being a simple champion with an extremely easy-to-understand skill set, and Riot wants to keep him that way.
However, Riot does not want him to have the minimal skills he currently has, where just throwing a Q allows you to walk up and attack the enemy. They want Dr. Mundo’s gameplay to have more depth; one of the first experiments was that this champion would gain health when taking damage. However, during testing, this gameplay yielded many poor results, so they shifted to a new direction, allowing Dr. Mundo to convert all armor/magic resistance from items into health.

In some of their experiments, Riot Games attempted to turn him into a bizarre mutant with the ability to make the corpses of minions explode and link together. However, this idea was scrapped because it was overly complex, while Riot wants to maintain simplicity for this champion.

Regarding Dr. Mundo’s appearance, Riot shared that they are focusing on two main aspects: highlighting the Doctor – the Physician and Mundo – a lunatic, in the rework. Everything about Dr. Mundo’s new design seems to be incomplete, so Riot cannot provide players with it yet; however, they shared many sketches of this champion’s new design.

Finally, Riot Games revealed that Dr. Mundo’s rework will be released in 2021, so we will have to wait until the end of this year for more details about this champion. Perhaps in the remaining half of 2020, Riot Games will introduce the three new champions first to ensure that six new/reworked characters are launched this year, following Sett as a completely new champion and Fiddlesticks and Volibear as reworks in the first half of the year.
