Mages and magic damage compositions have always been an essential part of Teamfight Tactics, and after the release of patch 10.12, this composition suddenly has a very different playstyle with the introduction of the new 5-cost unit – Janna.
Previously, the strength of the Mage – Celestial composition came from the high damage of champions like Syndra and Vel’Koz casting spells continuously. However, in this new patch, the basic attacks of Mages will be significantly stronger thanks to Janna’s unique Celestial system. The reason lies in the fact that the Mage system enhances magic damage, while the Celestial system converts basic attack damage into magic damage, allowing you to deal damage without relying too much on casting spells.

Because the composition depends on having Janna, the post-update Mage composition will heavily rely on levels; reaching level 8 and having 6 Mages is a crucial factor to play this composition effectively. Therefore, in the early and mid-game, you can play anything you want, as long as you maintain your health. It’s best to secure strong 1-cost units early on that can easily combo together.

By mid-game, you will have several options to upgrade your composition depending on what you get from the shop. If you secure Fizz early at level 6, a Pilot composition with 4 Mages is a solid choice. If you purchase Jayce and can get him to 2 stars, you can add a Pirate alongside 4 Mages to both secure health and gain some extra gold. Remember that after the update, selling high-cost units from level 2 and above only incurs a 1 gold loss, so you can easily “pivot” your strategy.

By late game, the two most important units at this point are Xerath and Janna. You should equip energy-boosting items on Janna to enable her to cast her ability as quickly as possible. For Xerath, having plenty of attack speed from Janna’s skill will ensure that many “falling stars” are unleashed every time he casts his spell.

Additionally, you need a frontline unit to both attract the opponent’s team and deal damage or provide some effect to create space for the Mages. Riven is the easiest unit to find as this champion deals wide area damage, has a shielding ability, and can survive for a long time. However, if you can get a 2-star Gangplank, replacing Riven with this Pirate is the best option.
In terms of items, Janna’s top priority is a Spear of Shojin to continuously regenerate energy, thus increasing the number of tornadoes she can cast. Xerath doesn’t differ much, with Guinsoo’s Rageblade and Zeke’s Herald being the optimal choices. For pure AP items, if you have items like the Sorcerer’s Hat or Morello’s Evil Tome, it’s best to give them to Viktor.
