In the world of LoL, there are many pairs of “fierce rivals” with deep connections, but when it comes to the LCK, many will immediately think of Chovy and Faker in the showdown between two of the best Mid Laners in the world today. Faker and Chovy represent two generations of talented Mid Laners produced by the LCK, each with a different playstyle. Faker has transitioned from being a “carry” player to making plays and leading his teammates. Meanwhile, Chovy has remained the main source of damage for every team he has played for since his debut.

Recently, Chovy admitted he was genuinely surprised after a year where T1’s Mid Laner performed exceptionally and won the Worlds 2023 championship. According to Chovy in a recent interview: “Watching Faker’s matches, I often wonder why he stands out and performs well in so many games, especially in big matches.”

“Just looking at his playstyle, you can see he isn’t afraid to take risks no matter what the situation may be. Honestly, during the mid to late game, trying to catch every angle is completely normal. But when I see Faker play in a big match, he always has more “aggression” than usual right from the laning phase. Perhaps this is what forces opponents to be more cautious and consider more, as well as be more surprised.”

Chovy himself admits he is learning this playstyle from Faker. The Gen.G player stated he always feels the need to play more proactively. There are risks involved, but Chovy is still striving to improve and experiment with more proactive playstyles than usual.
At the recent Worlds 2023, Gen.G managed to defeat T1 in one game. However, in that match, the standout players were Peanut, Doran, and to some extent, Peyz, while Chovy could only perform at a maximum average level. Chovy’s limitations became apparent when he faced a Bilibili Gaming team that played too aggressively and controlled the game.

Chovy’s relatively weaker skills compared to his opponents, along with his dip in form, can be seen as significant reasons for Gen.G’s failure at the recent Worlds 2023. And in terms of composure and performance in crucial moments, it is clear that Chovy still has much to learn from Faker.
