In League of Legends, there are numerous champions capable of fulfilling various roles. Notably, with players who possess a wide champion pool like Keria or Faker at their peak, a champion traditionally “pigeonholed” into certain roles (like Master Yi or various Marksmen …) can completely shift to playing Mid Lane or Support. This diversity enhances the gameplay of League of Legends and helps Riot approach their goal of balancing champions. However, there are also some “quirky” champion matchups that the League of Legends community finds extremely frustrating, such as Vayne in the Top Lane.

The Vayne Top Lane matchup is actually quite strong, especially when played by top-tier players like TheShy as a prime example. However, the issue that leads the League of Legends community to despise this champion in the top lane is that many players “copy” it without having the necessary skills, which in turn adds burden to their team. Vayne is a champion with stealth, mobility, and true damage but is also incredibly fragile. Facing off against sturdy top lane champions or those with strong engage can pose serious challenges for Vayne. When played by less skilled players, they can easily be “shut down,” making the team feel like they are playing with a handicap.

Recently, according to Gumayusi – the 2023 World Champion, Vayne now might actually be a viable Top Lane champion. In fact, Vayne as a Marksman has not appeared much in the latest metas. Moreover, this champion requires specific items to deal significant damage in team fights. However, with a playstyle that favors champions capable of early engagements, Vayne can be a “burden.” Additionally, in the late game, Vayne struggles to compete with champions like Aphelios or Smolder.

In reality, the choice of a champion for a specific lane depends on the champion’s suitability for that lane, the skills of the player, and their preferences. Therefore, playing Vayne in the Top Lane is not an issue as long as the player possesses good skills and can coordinate with teammates for the common goal of victory.
