HLE’s playstyle recalls the “ZOFGK” of the 2023 – 2024 season
In the losers bracket match of the EWC 2026 qualifiers on May 25 (Vietnam time), HLE easily overcame NS with a 2-0 score. Although in game 2, HLE’s early phase was pressured with Gumayusi repeatedly dying, the AD still contributed to the team’s overall victory as the top lane stepped up to “carry the team.” However, this isn’t the first time Gumayusi has been pressured like this, and from how HLE still managed to win afterward, the shadow of the old ZOFGK is being revived.
First, it’s important to note that Zeka is in excellent form, and Delight made a very impressive return after one game and one substitute appearance. Of course, no one would compare Zeka to Faker or Delight to Keria. However, whenever Gumayusi is excessively targeted, HLE’s rotations up to the top lane are incredibly smooth. In fact, HLE often forces the opponents to focus on Gumayusi so that the top lane can be strong enough.
When the opposing bot lane has Ashe – Seraphine, if they’re not camped constantly and gain an advantage, it becomes very difficult to contest in mid-game, especially with an AD player as experienced with Ashe as Gumayusi. But because of this, players like Zeka and Zeus find more space. Unless the opponent uses a champion who can outplay the rest as their kills increase, like Lucian, it isn’t too hard to counter, even strong late-game champions like Yunara.
When the top lane shoulders the main damage “carry” responsibility, this reflects the legendary ZOFGK playstyle, especially during the meta when swap lanes were dominant. Currently, HLE has a daring Jungler, a midlaner and toplaner in great form, and an AD who can self-sustain while the Support roams. This is exactly the winning formula of the past ZOFGK.
But Gumayusi must reclaim peak form to prepare HLE for upcoming challenges
Despite being heavily targeted, Gumayusi has also made several trade damage mistakes. Overall, HLE is in a safe position in the group stage. However, the Road to MSI 2026 ahead is even more critical. Therefore, Gumayusi must regain his peak form and full concentration. Teams like T1, Gen.G, KT, and even stronger international teams won’t give HLE the chance to recover like they did against NS.
