A League of Legends Region in Dangerous Condition
For many years, the League of Legends community has frequently discussed the issue of “LoL will eventually become a dead game.” The reasons cited in these debates are numerous, revolving around LCK’s dominance in international tournaments, the excessive negativity surrounding the LPL, or the LCP merging regions after a long period of separation… However, recently, the LEC has become the region in danger, even at a “red alert” level, with news that the upcoming European League of Legends tournament will switch to an online format starting in 2027.

Specifically, according to Wadid – a co-streamer currently working for G2, next year’s matches may switch to an online format, except for away games. Additionally, Wadid also predicts that if this happens, the Berlin Studio – the main venue for the LEC region, will not be used from next year.
However, in his comments, Wadid did not confirm that this scenario would become a reality, nor did he clarify whether it would be the entire region going online or just G2. Nonetheless, this information has sent shockwaves through the League of Legends community, especially in Europe.

– If this happens, it would be the end.
– A terrible region, with only 2 or 3 teams capable of competing, unable to transfer players except for importing foreign talent, it’s a waste of time to watch while only a few matches a season are exciting.
– This has been said every year, what’s so strange about it?
In Reality, This Scenario is Understandable for European LoL
While regions like the LCK or even LPL consistently achieve certain results, the best performance of the LEC in recent years has been G2’s 5th-8th place finish at last year’s Worlds. The MSI performance is not much better as G2 was the only team to reach the top 4 in 2024. However, the investment level for the LEC from Riot remains very high as part of a Major league.

When receiving a large investment, comparable to higher-performing regions, but without corresponding results, this scenario is harsh yet not too surprising for the LEC region.
