However, alongside revered masters like Zhang Sanfeng or Hong Qigong, the Jin Yong universe is not lacking in “boatmen” who have directly pushed their students into tragedy. Whether due to dark ambitions or misguided teaching methods, they are evidence that choosing the wrong master can be scarier than facing a strong enemy.
Nie Xiaoqian – When Disciples Are Just Pawns for Their Masters’ Exploitation
If we had to identify the most terrifying character in Jin Yong’s novels, Nie Xiaoqian from The Smiling, Proud Wanderer would certainly be among the top. He is not frightening because of his martial arts but due to the facade of “Gentleman Sword” that hides his hypocrisy. Nie Xiaoqian represents the type of master who sees disciples as tools to satisfy his thirst for power.
Under Jin Yong’s pen, the tragedies of Ling Hu Chong and Lin Pingzhi both stem from this master. For Ling Hu Chong – the child he raised from a young age, Nie Xiaoqian is willing to discard, frame, and harm him as soon as he sees signs of surpassing him or obstructing his path to dominance. As for Lin Pingzhi, he took him in not out of compassion but as a strategic move to seize the Sword Manual of the Evil.
Nie Xiaoqian’s cruelty reaches its peak when he uses his own daughter, Nie Ling San, as bait to manipulate Lin Pingzhi. He teaches his disciples patience, but in reality, he teaches deceit. The tragic end of the Nie family and the moral degradation of Lin Pingzhi is the most damning indictment of this master’s failure of character.
Diệt Tuyệt Sư Thái – Using Justice to Stifle Humanity
Unlike Nie Xiaoqian, Diệt Tuyệt Sư Thái from The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber is not a despicable person; she is a righteous master dedicated to the cause of “exterminating evil and protecting the way.” However, Jin Yong has constructed her as a symbol of extreme dogmatism, where personal grudges overshadow the master-disciple relationship.
Diệt Tuyệt’s greatest mistake is imposing her hatred on the next generation. She personally killed Qi Xiaofu – her most beloved disciple – simply because she refused to assassinate her lover. But the greatest victim of hers must be Chu Chỉ Nhược. From a kind girl by the banks of the Han River, Chu Chỉ Nhược is forced by her master to swear an oath of malice, requiring her to deceive the affections of Zhang Wuji to seize the Dragon Saber – Heaven Sword.
Diệt Tuyệt Sư Thái has turned her disciple into a machine of revenge for herself. She grants Chu Chỉ Nhược unparalleled martial arts secrets but simultaneously robs her of her conscience and lifelong happiness. This is a typical example of a master whose rigid educational methods lack the necessary compassion of a predecessor.
Triệu Chí Kính – Jealousy That Kills Talent
In The Return of the Condor Heroes, Jin Yong depicts Triệu Chí Kính as a tragicomic portrait of the talentless who wield educational authority. He is a typical representative of the “old ghosts bullying the new ghosts” mentality, petty and full of jealousy.
Tasked with teaching Dương Quá – a smart but stubborn child, Triệu Chí Kính chooses to suppress rather than nurture. He only teaches the entry-level mantra while concealing the vital techniques, leading to Dương Quá being brutally beaten in competitions. The physical and mental abuse from Triệu Chí Kính drives Dương Quá down the path of rebellion, filled with hatred for feudal ethics.
If it weren’t for the fortunate encounter with Little Dragon Girl, Dương Quá might have become a waste or a heretic under Triệu Chí Kính’s “teaching.” Through this character, Jin Yong warns against teachers whose personal grudges obscure their responsibility to nurture talent.
Giang Nam Thất Quái – Enthusiastic Masters with No Method
It would be unfair to place Giang Nam Thất Quái alongside villains, as they are some of the most loyal and righteous heroes in The Legend of the Condor Heroes. However, from a pedagogical perspective, Jin Yong cleverly points out that good people are not necessarily good teachers.
They made a serious mistake in evaluating and developing their students’ abilities. Guo Jing is inherently slow and honest, but the seven masters took turns cramming him with all sorts of flashy, convoluted, and mixed martial arts. They taught in a way that an intelligent person imposes on a foolish child, leading to Guo Jing learning ahead but forgetting later, with no solid foundation in internal energy.
The frustration and disappointment of Giang Nam Thất Quái nearly buried a great master. It wasn’t until Ma Yingjie taught internal energy and Hong Qigong taught the Eight Dragon Palms – a “simple” but powerful martial art – that Guo Jing finally found the right path. Their story is a classic lesson in the Jin Yong universe about how inappropriate education (personalization) can be harmful.
