A few hours ago, Valve released an important update with a series of significant changes. Specifically, this update introduces a new setting to increase character contrast along with various important changes to maps such as Dust2, Mirage, Inferno,… Let’s recap the notable points of this update!

1/ Boost Player Contrast

This is perhaps the most notable change in this update as it addresses a long-standing issue since the launch of CS:GO: characters blending in with the surrounding environment, making them hard to distinguish. This has been a challenging problem in CS:GO, as each map has its unique color tone, and while the original characters were carefully chosen, they still fell victim to this issue. Moreover, after the Operation Shattered Web update, which allowed players to freely choose their favorite characters, things became even more complicated.

Some characters blend in with the background and are very hard to detect.

In this latest update, Valve introduced a new setting called Boost Player Contrast, which players can find in the Video -> Advanced Video -> Boost Player Contrast section.

Specifically, this feature has the following effects:

– Increases the contrast of characters against the background when viewed from a distance.

– Enhances the sharpness of pixels at the edges when viewed from a distance.

– Creates a slight blur around characters to reduce background noise.

– When the character’s color and the surrounding environment are similar, a small halo with contrasting color will appear to make them easier to distinguish.

Here are some illustrative examples of the effects of this new setting:

Additionally, Valve has also changed the models of some characters and made adjustments to the “fog” in CS:GO maps to help distinguish characters from the background more easily from a distance.

2/ Map Changes

Some maps have also undergone changes, including those currently used in the competitive system such as Dust2, Inferno, Mirage, Overpass,…

Another significant change is that the entrance to bombsite B on Dust2 has been reversed, allowing CTs to observe the path from the tunnels to the bombsite more easily. This change is expected to help CTs defend this bombsite better than before, as they can now avoid flashes during rushes from opponents or when retaking, allowing them to smoke/fire key positions like car or tunnel entrance and retake the bombsite more easily.
