In League of Legends Season 11, the Mage class has a new item that provides Grievous Wounds effects alongside Morello’s Evil Tome. This new item is the Chemtech Purifier. Traditionally, most players prioritize Morello’s Evil Tome, but is it really superior to the Chemtech Purifier? First, we need to understand the effects of these two items.

In terms of basic stats, Morello’s Evil Tome offers 20 Ability Power and 250 health more than the Chemtech Purifier. However, the new item boasts 15 ability haste and 100% base mana regeneration. Therefore, the Chemtech Purifier synergizes well with champions that use a lot of energy. Furthermore, with a cost lower by 200 gold, the Chemtech Purifier is quite suitable for Mage champions playing in a Support role.

The activation methods for the Grievous Wounds effect from these two items are also quite different. With Morello’s Evil Tome, the condition for players to inflict 60% Grievous Wounds is to bring the target below 50% health. Meanwhile, the Chemtech Purifier requires you to immobilize an enemy champion to apply a similar effect.
This means that to use the Chemtech Purifier, your champion must land a crowd control effect on the opponent. Moreover, the effect of the Chemtech Purifier applies even to champions with high health. Therefore, this item can reduce healing on “tanky” targets without needing to deal significant damage.

In contrast, Morello’s Evil Tome requires you to bring the target below 50% health to inflict 60% Grievous Wounds. If you encounter champions with high health and defensive stats, Morello’s Evil Tome can be challenging to utilize effectively. Thus, this item is best suited when you need to finish off low-health targets.

In summary, the Chemtech Purifier is an excellent item for Mage champions in a Support role. Even some mid-lane champions like Anivia and Xerath can make use of this item. If you face overly “tanky” opponents, this item is extremely effective in helping the entire team take down that target. However, if you are playing high-damage Mage champions or playing as an assassin, Morello’s Evil Tome remains a good choice for finishing off enemy carries.
