Recently, Upcomer – a statistics and ranking platform for esports, announced the top 10 strongest League of Legends teams in the world as of June 14. This ranking reflects the standings after the second week of summer tournaments and is based on the performance evaluation of teams over the past month.
It’s not surprising that Royal Never Give Up remains in the top position. Their MSI 2021 championship is enough to demonstrate the absolute strength of this team. EDward Gaming ranks second as they continue to show impressive performance in the domestic Chinese tournament.
However, this ranking has sparked quite a bit of controversy as the standings of several teams are creating significant surprises. The first of which is DWG KIA being rated only 6th in this list, dropping 2 places from the ranking before MSI.
The LCK champions lost to RNG in the MSI 2021 finals, and then faced a 0-2 defeat against KT Rolster in their second match of the LCK group stage. According to Upcomer’s evaluation, DK is indeed in a state of instability and can no longer maintain their comprehensive gameplay as seen in the latter half of the 2020 season.
Meanwhile, in the top 5 leading teams, there are 4 names from the LPL, including: RNG, EDG, FPX, and JDG. The only team outside of the LPL in this top ranking is… Gen.G Esports, which has won all their matches in the LCK.
According to experts’ opinions, the LPL currently has at least 4 teams that can “compete on equal footing” with RNG, and perhaps Upcomer based their rankings of EDG, FPX, and JDG above DK on this assessment, alongside performance and achievements.
Additionally, T1 surprisingly made it into the top 10 list, despite having a 1 win 1 loss record in the LCK as of June 14. The reason is that T1’s scrims during the pre-season have been rated as extremely good, and their performance against DK also shows significant improvement in gameplay.
However, it’s important to emphasize that this ranking is merely a reference, based on Upcomer’s own analysis and evaluation results. The fact that teams do not perform up to par in the early stages of the season is quite normal, so fans of teams with lower rankings have no reason to feel pessimistic, as the season still has a long way to go.
