The summer season of League of Legends 2021 has not yet reached its halfway point, but fans have already witnessed some unbelievable matches. From Invictus Gaming to T1, both of these giants have suffered inexplicable defeats, throwing away their massive advantages after taking the lead. In fact, for T1, this scenario has occurred not just once but more than three times.
Recently, the “Throwing Games” club has welcomed a new member as notorious as the others: G2 Esports. In their match against Misfits Gaming during week 4 of the LEC Summer 2021 group stage, Caps and his teammates likely delivered one of the most forgettable performances of their careers.
The contrasting form of MSF and G2 before the match (MSF being at the top while G2 had lost three consecutive games) led everyone to predict a tough match for G2. However, throughout the game, viewers witnessed a completely dominant performance by this team against their opponents.
By the 30th minute, G2 was leading MSF by approximately 10,000 gold, had secured the Earth Dragon Soul, 2 Barons, and led 8-2 in turret score. Everyone expected an easy victory for G2, following a familiar narrative that had been the case until now. But no. The drama unfolded at the 31st minute. After destroying the bottom lane turret and the mid lane turret, instead of staying to wait for the Elder Dragon to spawn, the entire G2 team decided to… go back home to shop.
Perhaps what they didn’t anticipate was that MSF read this situation perfectly, and a lightning-fast Elder Dragon steal occurred. Mistake followed mistake, and after letting the opponents secure the Elder Dragon right under their noses, G2 did not retreat immediately but instead remained to engage in a fight. MSF did not disappoint their opponents, charging forward to attack while G2 was splitting their formation to create a pincer maneuver against them.
MSF’s Alistar hid in the bushes at the bottom lane junction without being detected by G2 members, resulting in Caps, Rekkles, and Mikyx being “ganged up” by the opponents, while Jankos and Wunder took the long route and couldn’t assist in time.
The numerical advantage along with the Elder Dragon buff rendered G2’s 10,000 gold lead meaningless; they lost 4 members, leaving only Rekkles staring blankly as their Nexus exploded. G2 had led their opponents throughout the entire match, but with just one mismanaged situation, they threw away all the advantages they had built.
