Hyper-roll is one of the most unique strategies in Teamfight Tactics, aiming to upgrade 1 gold champions to 3 stars for victory. In past seasons of Teamfight Tactics, this strategy has always existed as an indispensable part of the game. Team compositions like Kassadin – Void in Season 1, Beastmaster in Season 2, Xayah – Blademaster in Season 3, Yasuo – Duelist in Season 4, or recently Vladimir – Dark Mystic in Season 5 are prime examples of this playstyle.

However, in Season 5.5, the hyper-roll strategy for upgrading a 1 gold unit to 3 stars has disappeared from the meta. Looking at various analytical sites, compositions that rely on 2-4 gold carries are present, but team comps using 1 gold 3 star carries are nowhere to be found. What happened in Season 5.5 that led to the disappearance of the hyper-roll playstyle?

The biggest reason for the “disappearance” of 1 gold 3 star carries is that upgrading higher-cost carries has become too easy. The main strength of 1 gold carries is their ability to reach 3 stars very early and leverage their superior stats to snowball the game. However, with the adjustments to the roll rates for 2 and 3 gold champions mid-Season 5, upgrading these champions to 3 stars has become much easier.

Clearly, in terms of champion quality, 1 gold 3 star units are at a significant disadvantage compared to higher-cost units of similar level like Hecarim, Soraka, Miss Fortune, Yasuo, etc. This has shortened the time in which teams centered around 1 gold 3 star carries can effectively snowball, weakening their overall impact.

Even if you manage to get lucky and snowball successfully, opponents can turn the tide with the Blessing of the Divine mechanism in Season 5.5. Simply put, this mechanism can grant players below 40 health a significant amount of gold and equipment (including Neeko’s Help) to help them level up and complete their compositions. At that point, all your efforts to hyper-roll and pressure your opponents from the start will lose much of their significance.

Another weakness of 1 gold carries is that they do not align well with the pace of play that Riot Games is aiming for in Teamfight Tactics. Essentially, Riot in Season 5.5 is guiding players toward a diverse playstyle that allows for continuous “shuffling” based on the Light Equipment or various traits you receive mid-game. Therefore, champions that can effectively utilize multiple types of items like Lucian, Miss Fortune, Yasuo, Heimerdinger, etc. are highly favored.

In contrast, the hyper-roll strategy requires you to identify a carry and composition right from the start and you must manage to assemble the “core” items for them to ensure a strong damage output. Remember that item drop randomness in Season 5.5 still plays a significant role, making it very challenging to execute a hyper-roll strategy. For example, if you intend to use Vayne as your carry but do not receive any Wooden Bows, even if you upgrade this unit to 3 stars, it won’t have enough damage.

In summary, with Riot changing the roll rates and introducing the Blessing of the Divine mechanism, it has become very difficult for 1 gold 3 star hyper-roll compositions to snowball successfully and win in Season 5.5. Therefore, in the current meta, hyper-roll compositions have completely disappeared. Perhaps Riot needs to make some adjustments to the roll rates for early levels for this playstyle to return. Otherwise, it will continue to “disappear” until the end of the season.
