G2 Esports has endured a 2021 season that can be summed up in two words: “disaster.” The renowned team from Europe and the world ended up completely empty-handed in domestic competitions. In fact, they even set a sad record: for the first time since its establishment, G2 failed to qualify for the World Championship.
After the match between G2 and Fnatic in the lower bracket of the LEC Summer 2021 playoffs ended in defeat for the “national circus”, immediately, on his personal Twitter, team owner Carlos “ocelote” Rodriguez posted a summary email for the entire season declaring that they would rebuild everything from scratch.

This has raised questions among G2 fans about who will stay and who will go after such a disappointing season. Some even believe that the entire roster of G2, except for the newly acquired ADC Rekkles, should be “released” as their performance and skill levels have declined.
This notion is further supported by the fact that just before the LEC Summer 2021 finals, G2 posted new images and video clips on the team’s personal page. Notably, in the clip and photos, only Rekkles appeared.

In reality, if a complete overhaul is necessary, G2 fans might not be too surprised. Aside from Perkz who has left and Rekkles who has just joined, the current roster consists of players who have already experienced G2’s “unstoppable” period in domestic competitions, especially in the 2019 season, which could be considered their most successful when they won both the LEC championships, the MSI 2019 championship, and were runners-up at Worlds. Perhaps now that they have achieved nearly all possible heights, the current G2 players have lost much of their motivation to compete.
In the past season, the entire G2 roster did not perform well. However, with the latest developments, it seems the “circus” has identified Rekkles as the new future of the team. But no matter what, the cleansing process will likely only take place at the earliest after LEC 2021 concludes, and new names will emerge after Worlds wraps up.
